The Box (2009)

The Box is, after Donnie Darko and Southland Tales, the next movie directed by Richard Kelly. As I really liked both of those movies, my expectations were high for this one. Does it manage to be as good?

Noma (Cameron Diaz) and Arthur (James Marsden) Lewis are a happy couple. They have a healthy family, a beautiful home, nice cars and good jobs. All of a sudden everything seems to go wrong and a package is delivered to their house. In this package there is a box with a button on it. A mysterious man visits them and tells them that if they press the button they will receive a million dollars. It also means that someone they don’t know, will die. It’s a tough decision for them to make, but they finally come to a decision.

With this movie I had the same feeling I had regularly with Lost. There’s lot of mystery and constantly new questions come up, which makes you think what the answers will be. What disappoint though are some elements that really don’t seem to fit and this leads to an unsatisfying conclusion. Sometimes various scenes do not flow well together. Characters get information they just ignore, even though it would be very logical to actual do something with it. The movie had potential, but in the end disappoints.

Score: 4
