The Notebook (2004)

After several people advised me to see this movie, I decided to listen and watch it. The Notebook is a very romantic movie that is mainly set in the 1940’s. Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) sees Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) around town and immediately is in love with her. She’s not interested in him, but after many times of him trying to go out on a date with her, she finally agrees. The two connect with each other and are inseparable until the end of summer. Alli has to leave to go back home. The question is whether their love for each other is strong enough to survive with the distance between them.

The title of the movie is about the book from which an old man is telling a story to a woman who suffers from dementia. This part of the story really lift the story to a higher level and adds an extra dimension to the love story.
This movie really makes you care about the lives of both Noah and Allie and does so in an exquisite way. The actors are great in their roles and really show their emotions in a convincing way.

The Notebook is almost perfect. The actors are right, the sets are beautiful and the story is good and well told. So why didn’t I score it a 10 if it’s almost perfect? The main reason for this is that the Notebook really is a classic “boy meets girl” story. After I finished watching it I didn’t feel wowed by it, which is necessary for me to give it a 10. But despite this I do know that this will be a movie which I’ll probably see once a year as it is an excellent romantic movie to watch together with a loved one.

Score: 9

  1. Those are the movies based on Nicholas Sparks’ books, they’re just like you described ‘The Notebook’, but I think that this one is still the best of the film adaptations of his works.

  2. Adapted to screen from the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, The Notebook is one of the best romantic dramas to hit the big screen in decades. Garnering high marks from a wide-range of critics, The Notebook is a funny and emotional film which deals with love, relationships, and the risks people take. James Garner turns in a notable performance as the elder man, Duke, who reads the pages of his notebook to dying nursing home resident Allie (Gena Rowlands). Overall, this is a classic “chick flick” with a dramatic twist. Set in the World War II era, The Notebook is a great film…-
