Your Highness (2011)

“How much money was wasted on this movie?”. That was the question which was constantly going through my mind as I watched this movie set in the middle ages in which two brothers, prince Thadeous (Danny McBride) and prince Fabious (James Franco) go on a quest to save the girl who Fabious will marry. She’s been captured by an evil magician who will take her virginity in order to become extremely powerful. On their journey they are helped by Isabel (Natalie Portman) and with that I’ve told you most of the story.

Your Highness should be a fun movie with the type of humour which was popularised by American Pie, The 40 Year Old Virgin and The Hangover. Unfortunately it fails to deliver something of the same quality.

This movie had a budget of 50 million dollar, which to me is crazy for a movie like this. Most of it seems to have been spent on special effects and set. It all looks great, but as this is a comedy the money should have been spent on good jokes.

Unfortunately it seems that the writers didn’t understand the art of writing rude jokes that are actually funny. The movie has got a lot of shocking ones, like a muppet magician who turn out to be a pedophile, a minotaur who rapes the prince’s helper and more of these type of tasteless jokes. I can laugh at rude jokes and shocking situations, but here it just didn’t feel funny at any time.

Your Highness doesn’t offer enough adventure or humor to keep you entertained for an hour and 45 minutes. Despite its cast of big stars this is one you should skip.

Score: 2

  1. Less of a stoner comedy than the title and marketing suggested, but still impressively committed to being as offensive as possible, I found myself appreciating the depths this was willing to plumb. Good Review!

    • I didn’t think it was a stoner movie at all. Weed is mentioned a couple of times, but they aren’t really smoking it. I agree with you about the depths they were willing to plumb…in that they were very consistent.

  2. It seems that it failed to give you impression. Still haven’t got the chance to watch this. Had recently bought a bunch DVDs, and well the movie goes down on the list now.

    • You have to see for yourself, but I just couldn’t laugh about the jokes that were made in this…couldn’t connect to them. Of course comedy is very personal 🙂

  3. A great review and everything you have mentioned is an absolutely spot on in what is undoubtedly the worst film I have seen so far this year.

Like you I can laugh at ‘crude’ humour jokes all day long, but this a rancid comedy that completey unfunny!

Keep the great reviews coming my friend….

    • It’s the worst I’ve seen of the 2011 movies, if I had to look at all the movies I saw this year this comes second after The Bill Collector, which was even worse.

Nice to hear I’m not the only one that didn’t like it.

  4. God this movie was terrible. I really wanted to like it, but there was so many miscues and the crude humor did not work in it’s favor. The nicest thing I can say about it is atleast it’s better than Sucker Punch.

    • I had the same idea when I started watching it, thinking that it would be my kind of humor and would like it. I think it’s a bit worse compared to Sucker Punch, but not by much 😉
