The Monday Question: Revenge!

The weekend is behind us. After all that relaxing it is time to get those brain cells fired up again and what better way to start it by thinking about movies? This week’s Monday Morning Question: What are your favorite revenge movies?

These are three of my personal favorites (not in any particular order)

Kill Bill

The title says it all, it’s the ultimate goal of the movie and Tarantino made it a very interesting journey. The Bride seeks revenge after being left for dead at her wedding and does so with great vengeance and furious anger.

Oldboy

When Dae-su Oh is released after being held for unknown reasons for 15 years he wants to find out who did this to him and punish them for it. This is the most shocking revenge movie I have seen as it has some very memorable scenes and a story with a twist that will disturb you like not a lot of movies can.

Dead Man’s Shoes

This movie tells the story of a soldier who comes back home and wants to get even with some local thugs because of what they did to his mentally challenged brother. It’s a small film, but the image of him wearing a gas mask while he exacts his revenge makes it a very haunting movie. It might be not that well known, but it’s worth seeking out.

What are you favorite revenge movies? Are there things you don’t like about them?

  1. I love a good revenge flick. Kill Bill and Oldboy are also two of my favorites. I haven’t seen Dead Man’s Shoes, but I will definitely have to check it out.

  2. Dead mens shoes kan ik nog niet, dus even gaan bekijken.

Mijn eerste de beste wraakfim die in mijn hoofd schiet is payback met mel Gibson uit 1999, hele goede film en goed verfilmd!!!

  3. random out of the blue selection here – mongol. genghis khan origin flick offers the premise that he became a mighty warrior out of revenge.

how about gladiator? father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and he shall have his revenge in this life or the next. brilliant.

    • Mongol…that reminds me I still have to finish that. Fell asleep first time I watched it (just was exhausted, wasn’t because of the movie).

Gladiator is also a classic revenge movie, like your choices…

      • thanks! im impatient for the second mongol movie actually. it may never happen

i just had more hit me in the face – oceans eleven is a heist revenge film and super cool at that. the bruce willis segment in sin city is pretty damned awesome too.

        • There was going to be a part 2? Is it still worth finishing the first movie then?

You have some very inspired choices! These are movies people wouldn’t immediately think of as revenge movies, but they acutally are.

  4. i very much enjoyed it every time we saw it but i know it’s not for everyone. if you were enjoying the movie then its worth finishing/trying from the start. part 2 is on the back burner apparently. im sure you can imagine a part chinese part russian part mongolian heritage funded film would have some difficulties getting made.

i was jsut trying to come up with an alternative to kill bill and oldboy as those movies are THE movies you think of when you think of revenge flicks but then i realised that revenge is a major driving force in human behaviour and my eyes were opened. sitting in front of a bookcase filled with dvd’s also helps.

    • Yeah, I quite liked it, so I will watch this again from the start.

Wow, such wise words at the beginning of the week πŸ˜‰ Like you said there are a lot of movies that use revenge as a driving force (just like jealousy)…

  5. Kill Bill and Oldboy are great choices. I’d also add Point Blank to the mix. I just caught up with it a few years back, and Lee Marvin is nearly perfect in it. Great cinematography too.

  6. Interesting topic, Nostra. I don’t agree w/ the idea of revenge/holding a grudge in real life but it certainly makes for an intriguing movie plot. Kill Bill is a good one, but haven’t seen the other two. I’m with Toby about Gladiator, definitely top of my list!

    • Me neither, there is a law system for that. As you say it makes for interesting movies though! You need a bit of a strong stomach for Oldboy and Dead Man’s Shoes has some scares….

  7. Just tweeted the ones that came to my mind first. Kill Bill was included. Have not seen Your other two choices but now would like to. Great topic in film! Look forward to future entries.

    Aurora

  8. Nothing like some good revenge. A bit off-topic (as it’s a television series rather than a movie) but the first season of Oz finishes with the weakest prisoner finally finding some balls and giving his Neo-Nazi cellmate the comeuppance he so richly deserves.

  9. God I remember seeing Dead Mans Shoes and my word was that a hard hitting film!! I really didn’t know what type of ride I was in for!!

Thanks for reminding me of it matey!

  10. 50 times? That is a lot. It’s one of those movies you will never get bored of though.

Saw Oldboy for the first time last year and that’s a classic too!

  12. Right now I can only remember ‘Office Space’ which is probably cannot be compare to ‘Old Boy’. Should really watch ‘Old Boy’ before they make the remake. Great set of list πŸ™‚

    • Office Space is one of the best comedies out there, haven’t seen that in ages, but it’s all so recognisable. Yeah, Old Boy is a movie which you should check out, just a warning that you’ll be a bit of a wreck afterwards πŸ˜‰

    • Sorry, but I must admit that’s another movie I have not seen. If it’s the ultimate revenge flick I’m sure I will love it.

Italian Job and Taken are both nice movies and it’s been way too long since I’ve seen Man of Fire as I can not remember it anymore even though I know I’ve once saw it.

      Nice to hear!
