The Monday Question: Buy!

Hello everyone, the weekend is done again and today I had a question based on my experience this weekend.

Over the years the way I get my movies changed a lot. I would rent lot of them ever since the VHS tapes. I always loved taking my time and just look at all the spines to see if there were titles that looked interesting. I could easily spend more than an hour picking out movies. Not having any internet you didn’t have any idea if a movie was good, but through the years I perfected my choices. I usually could tell by the way the cover looked if a movie was worth watching. I didn’t buy too many movies yet, but once the DVD came out I started collecting. I was buying lots of them in specialist stores, which since have disappeared unfortunately.

The internet has made everything a lot easier and I buy most of my DVDs (haven’t made the leap to Blu Ray yet) online now. Since I still had some gift certificates I decided to go to the shop for a change and just take my time going through lots of DVDs to get some interesting ones. It really was a feeling which I missed and thoroughly enjoyed (I’ve added the movies I bought after the break). If Netflix ever is introduced here I think my habits would change even further.

This week’s question: Do you still buy movies and do you miss the days when you could spend ages selecting what to get?

These are the movies I bought:

The Social Network

One of my favorite movies of last year and which I still didn’t own. Looking forward to rewatching it!

Babies

As I became a father almost three months ago this looked like a very interesting documentary where 4 babies are followed through their first year. Interesting to see the differences between the cultures of raising a child.

Russian Ark

The concept of this movie seemed very interesting. It’s a movie which is a single 95 minute shot where you travel through 3 centuries of Russian history in the Hermitage museum in St.Petersburg. Heard good things about it.

Etre Et Avoir

I’ve seen the cover of this DVD so many times, but actually never saw it. This documentary is about a school in a small French village. I have the feeling that it will be a very nice one to watch.

Do you still buy movies and do you miss the days when you could spend ages selecting what to get? What was the last DVD/Bluray you bought?

  1. I buy movies whenever I can, though most of the ones I have left to buy are expensive ones like Criterion DVDs that I have to have shipped from America which costs 15 bucks more than the rental price for each DVD and isn’t exactly convenient but I generally can’t complain. I own most of the English-language movies I ever really want to own anyway, and mainstream DVDs are easy and cheap to find. Haven’t really made the Blu ray transition yet. I own a Blu Ray player and 6 Blu rays but I’m so used to DVDs and buying Blu rays is even more expensive so currently I’m at a loss there.

    • Sounds like an impressive collection! I’ve got one of those Ikea bookcases which is full, so I’m slowly creating a stack besides it.

I wonder if Blu Ray is success, as I actually don’t know any friends who have a player or buy them. Personally I don’t have the feeling I’m missing out on much either.

  2. Being a student, you can understand that I don’t really have a budget for collecting DVDs, so I usually get them online or go to the cinema, but when I will have enough money, yeah, I will be collecting DVDs, especially the ones that I love, the classics, the guilty pleasures. Speaking of the latter, one of the first DVDs I got was Dirty Dancing 🙂

    • The internet has been a big reason why so many videostores are closing down, they really can’t keep up with the convenience.

Everyone has their guilty pleasures. i probably have quite a lot of them in my collection too 🙂

  3. I don’t buy so many DVDs now, a lot of the DVDs I watch are rented through LoveFilm. I made this transition as I kept running out of space on my shelves! They were filling up with DVDs that I would perhaps only watch once, so it didn’t seem worthwhile to keep buying them. Haven’t made the leap to Blu-Ray yet, my TV isn’t that huge so I don’t think it’s worthwhile. I don’t really miss going into a shop and buying DVDs because I would invariably spend more money than I initially intended!

    • Wish we had something like that over here. My cable provider supposedly offers something, but will need to upgrade my receiver first.

I know that issue of running out of space! Especially when you usually only watch a movie once like you say. Hahaha, yeah I did want some other DVD’s while shopping but decided to try and just use my gift certificate. Ended up having to pay a little bit more, but not too much 😉

  4. I love to buy movies. I still buy them often. I can totally relate with you. Even now I tell my wife to roam around the mall while I spend time in HMV just browsing and looking for deals. Even though the Internet is there, I don’t think I’ll ever give up physically buying DVDs.

    • There aren’t many shops anymore unfortunately that got big selections. I ended up at a shop with a lot of alternative films, which is why I bought the DVD’s I mentioned. Whenever I’m in the UK I always enjoy browsing HMV!

I regularly buy DVD’s online (usually from play)

  5. Interesting question, Nostra… At last count I have about 230 DVDs in my collection. However, I haven’t bought a DVD for quite a while.

Like Russ I joined LOVEFiLM because I’ve only really watched the DVDs I own once. Renting seemed a much better idea 🙂

    • Yeah, I can totally understand that. I usually watch things once since I want to see new movies 😉

Of course there will always be some DVD’s that you just got to own though!
