The Monday Question: Shame!

It’s Monday again, so I hope you had a great weekend. Mine has been pretty good as I managed to watch a couple of movies out of the IMDB top 250, which means I’m almost at my goal for this year of having seen 200 of them. This week’s Monday Question is about the movies you are not readily to admit that you actually like them, even though most critics will say that it was absolutely horrible, the so called guilty pleasures. Of course you shouldn’t be ashamed of loving a movie everyone else doesn’t seem to like and now is the time to speak up:

What are your guilty pleasure movies?

These are 5 of my guilty pleasure movies:

1. The Transformers movies
The whole reason I was thinking of the question was because I recently watched Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I know that it’s a movie which really doesn’t have a good plot or interesting characters, but I just loved the action sequences in it. Review will be up this week.

2. Kung Pow

Extremely silly, but one of those comedies which I probably seen more than ten times.

3. The Fast and Furious franchise

With these I really don’t care what people think of them, they are so much fun to watch. I think I actually saw all of these at the cinema and it’s something I plan to do as well when the next one comes out.

4. The Notebook

As someone who really loves his action movies, it’s probably surprising to see this movie on the list, but this is one of those movies which makes me feel good as it just shows how powerful love is and what people in love are willing to do for each other.

5. White Chicks

As I think Terry Crews is so funny in it.

  1. Oh, I love this post! I have a lot of guilty pleasures 😛

Some of them are Dirty Dancing, Fast&Furious franchise, Notebook, A walk to remember and Cry Baby (it’s a 90s Johny Depp movie…great soundtrack, I think it’s parody, but it’s good). I’m sure there are a lot more, but these come up right now!

    • I probably have more as well, but thought 5 of them was enough to admit 😉

Yeah, I know Cry Baby, I think my sister used to watch that movie a lot when we were younger. Never saw it myself.

  2. That’s a nice list, especially since I’ve seen a few and not liked them. Here’s five that qualify for me:

    Some Kind of Wonderful
    L.A. Story
    Footloose
Several Roger Moore James Bond movies – The Spy Who Loved Me especially
The Karate Kid and its sequel

Now some of these are well-liked across the board, so I’m not sure it fits with the idea of a Guilty Pleasure. But I think that I like these more than many people.

    • Of those I only have seen The Karate Kid, it was cool at the time, not sure if I’d feel the same if I saw it now. Of course that’s the case with a lot of eighties movies I guess!

  3. Hi, Nostra and company:

    Excellent topic and question!

    My Five Guilty Pleasure Films?

1:The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension: Off beat, updated 1984 B-Movie take on 1940s serials with a Doc Savage spin. An early platform for lots of well known talent today.

2:Infra-Man: Very low budgeted 1975 Shaw Brother ‘Chop Sockey’ import from China that sets the template for every every variation of the later Power Ranger franchise. From terrible dubbing, To Princess Dragon Mom as the Evil Matriarch. All the way down to her giant Asparagus and Slinky Armed henchmen.

3:Extreme Prejudice: Walter Hill and John Milius’s 1987 either side of the border drug running thriller. Starring Nick Nolte as a second generation Texas Ranger battling his long time friend and narcotics kingpin. While fending off a group of deep covert ops led by Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown. Superb ensemble acting with a tremendous homage to Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch to wrap things up.

4:Who’ll Stop The RainA little known gem from 1978. Again with Nick Nolte, Tuesday Weld and Michael Moriarty and five kilos of Laotian heroin against a Who’s Who of character actor bad guys from San Francisco to L.A. and down the west coast to Mexico. The flip side of Forrest Gump for post Vietnam America.

5:Trancers: The last of the old school cinematic tough-guys, Tim Thomerson travels back in time from 2247 to 1985 L.A. to stop a crazed, time jumping cult leader from killing off the great, great, great grandparents of those running future Los Angeles. Excellent bang for the buck, low budgeted franchise starter with a young, lovely Helen Hunt sharing screen time.

    • Haven’t heard of any of them! Is there one of them which I really need to check out? The descriptions make them seem a bit cheesy, but that can be fun sometimes…

  4. Haha, what a fun post. Mine include Labyrinth and The Last Unicorn – they make me happy! Secretly I love PS I Love You and 27 Dresses, too…

Congrats on seeing more of the top 250 😀

    • I remember you posting about The Last Unicorn. PS I Love You? That’s a movie I wasn’t able to finish and actually gave a 1… So I guess it’s a very valid choice for a guilty pleasure movie!

Thanks! Almost hitting that 200 marker…

  5. What a fun post man!

5 Guilty Pleasures, huh? Okay, here we go:

(arrghh, you took White Chicks! Touche!)

    1. Zoolander, 2. Superbad, 3. Underworld series, 4. Moulin Rouge, 5. 13th Warrior

    • Thanks! I like Zoolander, Superbad and Mouling Rouge as well. The Underworld series really isn’t my thing, so I never saw those and can’t remember much of 13th Warrior. Most of them are movies I don’t mind revisiting though, so I think they are great choices!

  6. Nostra, I have officially revoked your man card after that mention of The Notebook 😀 I’m kidding, I’ve probably seen that movie a few too many times myself. Also I don’t know what’s with 13 Going on 30, if it’s on TV, I would probably watch it.

  7. I think I have many of them! My guilty pleasures include chick flicks like Bring It On, 10 things I hate about you, etc. I’m surprised you like Notebook :)) Gosling is a charm isn’t it?

    • Haven’t seen those movies, but just looking at them on Youtube I can imagine them being guilty pleasures 🙂

Gosling was good in it, but it really was the story with the old people that won me over…

  8. I’m glad that Scarletsp1der (spelled correctly?) mentioned Underworld, as that is definitely a guilty pleasure. Of course it helps that Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous as Selene, and Bill Nighy is brill too! I was a massive Transformers fan when I was a kid in the early 80s, so the first film blew me away, and is definitely a guilty watch. However, my fanboy-dom is also why I hated the next two movies so much.

No-one else mentioned Conan the Barbarian or Robocop? I’m surprised. Oh, the shame the shame!

    • Is Robocop a guilty pleasure? I’m surprised you see those movies like that. Personally I think they are awesome (although the first one is way better than the sequels).

      Still have not watched Conan…
