The Many Faces of… Christian Bale

roles overview Christian Bale movies

Welcome to a new installment, this week featuring English actor Christian Bale. He was born in 1974. His father was a commercial pilot and his mother worked in the circus. He did his first acting in commercials (for Lenor and Pacman). In 1986 he started appearing in movies and it was his performance in 1987’s Empire of the Sun which earned him lots of praise. He considered quitting, but was convinced to continue acting, which has resulted in an impressive career. He is willing to do a lot for his roles as he has lost massive amounts (up to 30 kilos) of weight to play his roles in The Machinist, Rescue Dawn and The Fighter and gaining it back for roles he did in between.

Bale is one of those actors I will watch in almost any film he’s in. As for my favorite it is probably his role in The Prestige.

What’s your favorite Christian Bale role?

  1. Christian Bale is one of my favorite actor. He’s been at it for so long and he is still younger than many of his peers. I would say my favorite of his is American Psycho but I also really liked what he did in Harsh Times and The Prestige.

    • I still have not seen American Psycho because I’ve got this image in my mind that it’s extremely bloody and it wouldn’t be something I’d enjoy. Is that correct though?

  2. The Fighter, American Psycho, Empire of the Sun. You could tell he was a brilliant actor from the very beginning. Shame about the being a complete and utter asshole on the set of Terminator: Salvation.

    • Haven’t seen his very early work. I think he came onto my radar around the time that Shaft came out.

Yeah, the Terminator Salvation incident was a big thing for a moment, but I guess it shows his utter dedication to his craft. Shame that that movie wasn’t very good though…

    • Yeah, since he was just added to the relay race I just had to do one of him. Still have to see if I can do one for your choice as well ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Hi, Nostra and company:

    Great choice. Good on ya!

    Class knows class.

Christian Bale has been in the game since childhood with ‘Empire of the Sun’. And has been
consistently plying, honing and improving his craft. Accumulating an impressive resume of top of the line directors through the years. Readily delivering more than required or asked for. While creating a solid A-List actor today.

  4. Massive fan of Christian Bale. He’s one of the few actors out there that I can honestly say I really very much respect. He’s hard working and always seems to throw everything he has at every single role he does. Whether it’s relatively silly stuff like Equilibrium (yep, that’s how I see that film!) or the weighty Rescue Dawn or Machinist.

Someone who can so drastically change their physical appearance for a role has my respect!

    • Nice to hear Jaina! I have seen Equilibrium and that movie was silly indeed, even though I did enjoy watching the gun kata thing. It’s scary that they do this as there is a chance your body starts to act weird because of it.

  5. Yes!! Team Batman with his own spotlight! (that’s my little plug to everyone to keep him in the Top Ten Actors of All-Time relay race!!!!) ๐Ÿ˜€

I still like him the most as Batman/Bruce Wayne, but if I had to exclude that, I’d choose The Prestige!

  7. LOVE him!! He’s one of those extremely good looking actors who can act, like the one I’m selecting for the Top 10 Best Actor Relay Race [hint, hint], ahah.

  8. I’m gonna go on a limb here but I actually think that Christian Bale’s weakest performance has been his take on Batman, which is not to say I think he’s poor in it, he’s simply not as his most comfortable. I feel he’s best when he takes on roles that are more energetic and intense. Examples of these are his American Psycho role or his awarded performance as the junkie brother in The Fighter.

All in all, I can’t wait to see him in the latest of the Dark Knight series.

    • I guess it’s also because of the movie that he can’t stretch too far with his acting.
Really going to try and watch American Psycho…it’s a movie I just steered clear off because it seems just too much for me, but curiosity is slowly taking over…

      • Hey Nostra, American Psycho really is too much. I actually watched the unrated version, believe it or not. I wish I could un-see some of them. It was a fantastic performance from Bale though, I’m glad he got the role over Leonardo DiCaprio.

  9. Big fan of Christian Bale. My favorite role from him is Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, though he is also terrific in The Machinist, The Prestige and The Fighter, to name a few more.
