As you probably know I’m not a big fan of Meryl Streep, despite her being a good actress. It means I often skip movies she’s in and with that I also run the risk of missing a very good film. I hadn’t seen Doubt yet and wasn’t planning to until recently Viola Davis was added in the best actresses relay race and read that one of her best performances was in this movie. Seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman was also in this movie I just had to give it a spin.
The movie is set in 1964 in a Catholic school which is run with an iron hand by Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep). All kids fear her because you are in trouble if you are sent to her office. One of the teachers at the school is Sister James (Amy Adams) who’s very innocent and believes in the good of everyone. When she sees Father Brendan Flynn do something suspicious and one of the kids acting weird she’s having some doubts about what might have happened.
With all the scandals in church it’s a subject that’s very relevant and this movie succeeds in picturing the difficulty in proving something and the doubts people might have because charges can be so devastating to someone if they are wrong.
The acting in this movie blew me away, each an every actor gives a stunning performance and this results in a movie worth watching. It’s complex and will leave you thinking after the credits rolled.

Yeah, I wish I had seen it earlier and disregarded my aversion to Streep 🙂

Love this film, it was so intense and the acting showdown between Streep and Hoffman was a thrill to watch. Amy Adams and Viola Davis were also unforgettable.

WHAT. A. FILM. I wasn’t sure if I would like the film and delayed watching it for the longest time. But once I started watching I could not keep my eyes off it. Like you said the acting is amazingly brilliant. The story is exciting and full of suspence and the ending is just so … WOW
