Haven’t I heard this before? Cliché movie lines

review

I was recently watching Safe House and there was a line at the beginning of the movie I must have heard lot’s of times in other movies. It was “How do I know I can trust you?”. If you have seen a fair bit of movies, you will know what the other guy is going to answer to that.

It made me think of other cliché movie lines I must have heard lots of times and after the jump I’ve compiled a list of the ones I could think of.

Cliche movie lines

If you want to know in which movies these lines were used, just head on over to Subzin, an excellent site which allows you to search for specific dialog and returns all the movies which used it.

Youtube is also a good source for compilations of overused lines:
“You look like shit”

“You just don’t get it, do you?”

It’s gonna blow!

Any other lines you have heard time and time again?

  1. Hi, Nostra and company:

    Someone’s slipping.

Did anyone remember to include the ‘Obligatory Soliloquy as to Why the Bag Guy is about to ____________________________ ‘(fill in the blank) just before the tables turn and the hero gets the upper hand?

Also noticeably absent, the always faithful, “It’s quiet!….. Too quiet!”.

Could also add the recent snappy rejoinder to the cliched, “We’ve got company!” and the stoically handsome Captain asks, “How many?”. The plucky guy in the foxhole listening post, or behind the computer screen quips, “All of them!”.

And where, oh, where is the ever popular “These are not the Droids you’re looking for.”?

  2. I just stumbled upon your blog with your most recent post about Alec, whose blog I actively follow. Really enjoying yours now, as well. I stopped right in the middle of my review for Speed just to search around this blog. With this post, you manage to blend hilarious and mind-blowing terrifically. I’ll remember this post next time I hear “It’s gonna blow” (probably the most noticeable of them all), “You just don’t get it, do you?”, or “You look like s–t”. Thanks.

  3. Wow, those are REALLY clichéd movie lines! It’s amazing how many get used over and over again, I mean do these writers WATCH movies??

For me, the word ‘destiny’ is overused waaaaaaay too much… there’s a variety of ’em but every time I hear ’em I cringe!

  4. Wow, those videos had me rolling. “You look like shit” is a personal favorite. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that in real life, but it can play so priceless on screen. Great post here.

  5. “If I’m not back in 5 minutes…” – that one is definitely a staple in any horror film!

I like Ruth’s point about ‘destiny’. Now I think about it, I can think of a few films where it is overused.

  6. Great post, in particular the crazy quip got me thinking about an article I’ve been mulling over far too long and should finally sit down and write it – the obligatory ‘best movie of the year’ or something like it. How they lie to us.

Btw, did you review Safe House? I just watched it the other day. I was surprised how much I liked it.

Great site, looking forward to looking around. Please drop by and say hello. Cheers->

    • Well, marketing people are in the business of selling, so they will put any label on a movie (if that is what you mean with best movie of the year). Yeah I reviewed Safe House (loved it), the link to it is at the beginning of the article (just click on Safe House).

Thanks for dropping by and hope to see you back in the future!

  7. Reblogged this on Serendipity and commented:
He left out our personal favorite: “Stay in the car!” but I forgive him anyhow. Movies are bad, but lately, TV is nothing BUT cliches. I think they need their own special BlaBlaMeter.
