The Many Faces of… Denzel Washington

Welcome to a new installment of the Friday Faces, but before we get into it let me state that I will have a small break the coming two weeks. Don’t worry though as I have scheduled some posts for you to enjoy while I am away. Now back to the regular program:

Denzel Washington was born on December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon. When he was 14 he was sent to a military academy after his parents divorced. He got a bachelors degree in drama and journalism from University in 1977. He tried his hand at acting when someone at a summer camp suggested it to him. He decided he would and after acting in several plays and made his movie debut in a very small role in Death Wish. He appeared in several other movies and played Dr. Philip Chandler in St. Elsewhere. He became a large name in Hollywood after he teamed up with Spike Lee. He has played the inconic role of Malcolm X and has since had a steady career. He won 2 Oscars, one for Best Actor in Training Day and Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Glory and has been nominated 3 other times.

  1. As much as his Oscar for Training Day was a big surprise to me, I still think Washington was outstanding. My favourite of his would probably be The Hurricane though but it’s hard to choose. He’s delivered so many good performances.

  2. I’ve been waiting for Denzel!!! Thank you. a great choice. I loved him in so much. John Q, as Laura mentioned, is one of my faves. but Man of Fire is prob the best to me followed very closely by Glory and then Training Day (while I didn’t enjoy Training Day I love the fact that Denzel made me hate him =talent).

Remember the Titans is another that I thoroughly enjoy.

  3. Oh, such a great smile this man has!! I think my three favorite Denzel roles are Deja Vu, American Gangster and The Book of Eli. I still need to see Training Day!

    • Thanks for that…don’t know if I will do a post, because I’ve received it so many times now, which would mean a lot of questions I had to answer.

  4. I think he can be considered one of the legends of cinema right about now, although his filmography is somewhat filled with brilliant performances and films that are real duds. I could not sit through Book of Eli and actually stopped after like 30 minutes. The Hurricane is one of his best performances from the films I have seen.

    • I agree he can be, he’s a very charismatic actor who always is on top of his game even though like you say there are some which are not as good, but every actor has some.
