The Many Faces of… Vin Diesel

It’s Friday and time for a new installment of this weekly series. This time I decided to take a look at action star Vin Diesel. He was born as Mark Sinclair Vincent on July 18, 1967 in New York. He first appeared in a play at the age of seven. The reason he was in that play was because him, his brother and several friends had broken into the theater planning to vandalize it, but were offered parts by the artisitc director when he found them.

When he went to Hunter college he remained interested in acting and as he loved writing he started writing screenplays and making films. His first (uncredited) movie role was in Awakenings and the next movie was Multi-Facial, which he wrote, directed and starred in. He also did so for his next movie, Strays. Saving Private Ryan was the first big movie he starred in and he also did voice work for the giant in The Iron Giant. Next up were the Boiler Room and Pitch Black, but it was when The Fast and Furious came out he really became famous. He has since starred in a lot of action movies, but also tried different types of roles in both comedies and dramas.

If I have to pick a favorite role I’d probably go for his role as Dominic in the Fast and Furious series.

  1. Vin Diesel was great in Boiler Room. Loved that film – he did well in it. But it’s those damn Fast & Furious films that’s got me. He’s got a good role which suits him. And it looks like he enjoys that work too. He’s definitely not the world’s best actor, but as long as he picks the right roles, he’s not bad at all.

  2. Y’know, I must say that I’m indifferent towards Vin, I generally think of him as a one-note actor, hence not too many ‘faces’ that distinguish him from role to role. He seems quite funny in the Pacifier trailer, but I haven’t seen the movie itself.

  3. Hi, Nostra and company:

    Interesting topic.

Though Vin Diesel has never really projected a lot of what I would call ‘Range’. I thought he did a very notable job in ‘Find Me Guilty’. Also ‘Boiler Room’ and ‘Pitch Black’, before he went gear head, mid-range bad ass in the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise.

If DC Comics ever wanted to do a film of ‘Sgt. Rock and Easy Company’ in WWII, I think Max Martini (‘Saving Pvt. Ryan’, The Unit’) would make an excellent Rock. And Vin Diesel would be great as ‘Bulldozer’.

    • Thanks Jack. He was good in Find Me Guilty and the other two movies you mention. Don’t know those comics, but with your knowledge I’m sure you are right about casting him for it 🙂

  4. I thought he was great in the first Fast and Furious film. Also fun as Riddick but not he hasn’t really fulfilled his potential I don’t think.
