Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

What would you think if you’d see the following ad?

It’s an intriguing one, but the picture would probably make you laugh and think nothing more of it. It does make you wonder though if this guy really was able to time travel. There have been various stories of supposed time travel, but of course nothing which could be proved. This movie is based on this ad and fantasizes what could happen if you’d respond to it.

Three journalists decide to investigate the ad and find out more about this man, named Kenneth (Mark Duplass). He is a very cautious man who thinks he’s being watched by the government and the journalists find out it’s hard to earn his trust. After the first journalist is denied to join him, it’s up to Darius (Aubrey Plaza) to get into contact with him. She manages to bluff her way into him trusting her and slowly she gets to know Kenneth. Still she doesn’t know if he’s a genius or if he’s completely crazy.

Time travel is one of my favorite subjects and I’ve seen quite a few movies about them. This one intrigued me, because you don’t know where this movie will go (just like the reporters). A part of you wants to believe this guy can actually time travel, but you remain cautious. The story is told in an intriguing way and it had me hooked from the beginning. If you are interested in movies about the subject then I’m sure it is a movie you will be able to enjoy.

    • When I heard this was based on a real ad I just had to see it. I also heard that the guy from the ad makes an appearance in the movie (in a scene in a post office), but have not gone back to check that. There are a lot of time travel related movies at the moment so it’s a good time for time travel fans 🙂

    • Yeah, we have had some difference of opinion lately, haven’t we? Maybe my tastes are changing, I’m not sure. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on it.

  1. Nostra, I also saw this movie recently, and I really enjoyed it. Plaza and Duplass are both excellent, and it’s a fun story. From what I’ve read, the ad was actually written by a journalist for the paper who needed to fill space. The DVD has a short interview with him. That photo is priceless.

  3. I really enjoyed this movie. It was a “time travel” movie that doesn’t get bogged down or contradict itself *coughLoopercough*. It hits the comedic, touching, and dramatic notes in all the right places. Thanks for the good review.
