The Monday Question: Pause!

Each year hundreds of movies are released, more movies than you’ll be able to watch in 2 years. It’s something that got me thinking. Of course not all those movies will be worth watching, but for arguments sake let’s say they all are. It would mean you’d miss watching a lot of movies each and every year, potential masterpieces. As a movie lover you know there will always be more movies available then you will ever be able to watch. Forgetting your knowledge about upcoming movies I want to ask you the following question:

Would you mind if no new movies were produced and released for a year?

Personally I wouldn’t mind if this happened. There are so many classic movies I have not seen yet, but there are always new movies coming out I can not wait to see. If no new movies were made I could completely focus on older movies and hopefully catch some classic at the cinema, because they were not able to play anything but older movies. I know it is a situation which will never happen, but I think it is a nice fantasy.

Would you mind if no new movies were produced and released for a year?

  1. No probably not. It’s never going to happen but it’s a great discussion point.

Cinema releases from the previous year would have more than 1 or 2 weeks before being taken off general release, smaller and independent films would get a chance to get into the multiplexes and classics would get a new lease of life.

And the three hundred or so unwatched DVDs on my shelf would get a chance.

  2. I don’t think I’d mind at all. Don’t get me wrong, we all love the excitement and anticipation of what’s to come but like you say already, there’s so many classics and others to catch up on. It’s a constant battle getting through a mere shortlist as it is.

  3. I still have a lot of classics to see as well, but I think I would mind that some of the best directors today wouldn’t be making films. Nice question.

  4. I can’t honestly answer the question without retaining the knowledge that lots of the new stuff that comes out is crap. So I would be really bummed if nothing new came out. I have new films that I’m anxious to see and I LOVE that anticipation. I love talking about it, examining the trailers, etc. I also love the big screen experiences. The reality is that even with so many new movies, enough of it doesn’t interest me that I still have plenty of time to watch classic films. And I tend to watch quite a few classic movies.

    • I’m not that big on anticipation myself, which to me is all marketing. I love to anticipate something when fellow bloggers are enthusiastic, which is all that matters to me.

    • Will that be turned into a movie though…this was strictly about movies, so TV shows don’t count. Now answer the question again Sati πŸ˜‰

  5. I would be totally fine with a break. I still haven’t caught up with everything I really want to see from 2011 yet, not to count all the older films I need to get around to.

    • I don’t go as much as I would like, but that’s mainly because family life is very busy. I’m already happy if I manage to prepare all my posts for the whole week on Sunday πŸ™‚

  6. If the cinemas were then filled with classic films and films I wanted to see on the big screen, it wouldn’t be a big deal. And in theory it’d be great to have a “break” from catching new films. But… it’ll never happen and I make my own decisions on what films I want to see. Whether they be classics in the comfort of my own home or new films in the cinema.

    • So maybe cinemas should have one or two weeks a year where they only show older movies and see how that would work out. Seems like more people would be interested in something like that.

  7. I think that’s a great idea. It would be disappointing to miss out on new work from some of my favorite directors/actors, but at the same time I still have a ridiculous amount of catching up to do. There is an endlessly supply of films I want to see — now if only I had the time to watch them all!
