Obstruction 1: Movie 43 (2013)

The 5 Obstructions blogathon

This is my own entry for the 5 Obstructions Blogathon: Obstruction 1. I have chosen to go with a movie I did not like, which is Movie 43 (I don’t suggest anyone to watch it. My real score: 1

It’s been a long time since there has been a movie in which so many famous actors and actresses participate, but in Movie 43 the list of celebrities seems unending. Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Dennis Quaid, Naomi Watts, Anna Faris, Emma Stone, Kieran Culkin, Greg Kinnear, Seth MacFarlane and Richard Gere are just some of the picks for this comedy. Movie audiences have grown to like the Apatow inspired gross out humour and Movie 43 is full of it. The question is, will you be able to enjoy it?

The setup for this movie differs depending on where you see it. According to Wikipedia the version which is available in the U.K. and The Netherlands (which I’ve seen) revolves about a couple of teenagers trying to find the most banned film in the world (even banned in “the country of Amsterdam”) on the internet. In their search for it they find several illegal short movies. As the movie progresses their search turns out to be a threat to the world’s existence. In the version which was shown in the US the various short movies are glued together through a pitch a screenwriter is making for ideas he has. As the short movies can be watched on their own those stories help in making it a cohesive piece.

Will you like it? As you know humour is very personal and not every sketch will be funny to everyone. Personally I thought the Truth or Dare sketch with Halle Berry and Stephen Merchant was hilarious, each trying to outdo each other with dares the other one does not back out of. Another highlight is the sketch called Happy Birthday starring Johnny Knoxville and Sean William Scott. In it Knoxville’s character Pete has caught a leprechaun (a hilarious appearance by Gerard Butler) and is demanding to give his roommate the pot of gold he has. The movie also contains various commercials, one for the iBabe (an MP3 player in the form of a naked woman), one to raise awareness of kids working inside things like ATMs and copiers and one for Tampax (which you could say is a convincing way to get women to buy the brand). Not all sketches work, but as there are several of them, you will quickly be able to see another one. Many might find it all very tasteless and gross, but if you are in the right mood it can be a very funny movie.

  1. Great entry, Nostra! Boy I don’t even want to see this movie, it’s amazing you could find something positive from it, ahah. GB looks positively stupid in that Leprechaun outfit, ahah, it seems to be the crudest part of the segment from what I’ve read.

    • Thanks Ruth…I did have a head start on the rest since I already know all the obstructions, but I guess someone has to kick it off with the first review 🙂

It was hard finding something positive about it, although I’ll have to admit that GB was pretty funny as a swearing leprechaun (that’s pretty much all he did).

  2. Good start to the blogathon! I’ve not seen Movie 43, but most people seem to think it’s a pile of crap, so well done on managing a positive review! 🙂

I think I might actually find this quite tricky. Might pick a Paul WS Anderson film I hate (which is most of them), and try to say something positive about it. Should be quite challenging.

    • Thanks man! Since comedy is personal it might make it a bit easier to see what some people might find funny in it even though I didn’t. I think the hardest thing would be to write a negative review for your favorite movie..as you usually don’t mind the flaws they might have, but you would need to blow them up in order to make the review negative.

Interesting choice for your entry, looking forward seeing which movie you end up picking and if you will manage to convince me to see it 😉 Although I just looked at his movies and that is going to be a tough task! 🙂

  3. I haven’t even seen this film but I trust you completely so as not to watch it. It sounds terrible and I’m just amazed at how you managed to find even that many good things about it. Great entry!

  4. Very interesting… I was a bit surprised your review wasn’t fully optimistic, but like many others commented, maybe there weren’t many good things to find ;). I’ll never watch it I guess. *Off to finally finish my own post*

    • Already had a hard time stretching it to a 7 while remaining realistic 🙂 I could have gone all out but it wouldn’t have been believable.
