The Monday Question: Best of the year!

The year is progressing fast and I thought it was a good moment to look back at your favorite movies you have seen this year up to now. I think it offers a chance to hear about movies you might not have seen yet (or have not even heard of), but which others loved.

My personal top 5:
5. Upstream Color
4. The Impossible
3. The Place Beyond the Pines
2. Fast & Furious 6
1. Before Midnight

Which movies are currently in your top 5 of 2013?

    • Same number one. Have not seen To the Wonder, nor am I planning to (not a Malick fan). Spring Breakers was cool. Trance I have seen recently and although I really liked the concept it was a bit too much for me. It looked great though. Have not heard anything abotu What Richard did.

  1. Note, some of these watched on dvd, and are from 2012. Unranked:

    The Imposter
    The Place Beyond the Pines
    Laurence Anyways
    The Hunt
    Arbitrage

Still need to see Before Midnight and Stoker

    • Don’t watch much horror so I can’t comment on Evil Dead. Behind the Candelabra was very good indeed. Just read the synopsis of Hidden Face and this sounds very interesting. Added it to my ‘to watch’ list.

  2. I haven’t done a very good job with cinema releases this year. Can’t really think of a top 5 so far. How awful! Though, did see The World’s End last week, and it’s definitely one off my favourites of the year.

  3. Here are my Top-5 features for the year so far:

    5. “Broken”
    4. “7 Cajas” (7 Boxes)
    3. “Out in the Dark”
    2. “This Is the End”
    1. “Before Midnight”

    • Have only seen Before Midnight out of those! 7 Boxes sounds interesting. This is the End is mentioned a lot, don’t know when it will be available here…

  4. I’ve only seen 9 films from this year, but right now ‘The Bling Ring’, ‘Mud’ and ‘Before Midnight’ are all resting comfortably at the top. All very different and yet very complex and well crafted films.

    • Mud still is not out here, but it’s been getting a lot of praise so I’m looking forward to seeing it. The Bling Ring looks interesting. Think it will be out this week so I’ll probably go see it soon. I’m pretty sure that Before Midnight is going to be at the top of my list at the end of they year.

  5. I’m not sure I could assemble a worthy Top 5 yet. I adored The Place Beyond the Pines, so that would make my list too. Recently saw The Way Way Back and that is a worthy contender as well.

    • Yeah, I can understand that it is quite hard this year to create the list. Will check out The Way Way Back once it has been released over here.

  6. I haven’t seen many fantastic films yet this year, but the top of my list are:
    1) The East
    2) Star Trek Into Darkness
    3) The Bling Ring
    4) Trance
    5) This Is The End

    • Am quite a fan of Brit Marling so will be checking out The East. Had not heard of this one before. Will be checking out a couple of the other ones (have some time to catch up on the cinema releases).

  7. The Place Beyond the Pines
    Mud
    Upstream Color
    Spring Breakers
    World War Z

I really hope something comes along to shake up that list. Thus far it has been the summer of meh at the movies.

    • Have not seen too many summer movies yet, but probably will be checking out World War Z soon. Usually the second half of the year has some good movies in store…don’t know if that’s the case this year though….

  8. 1. Before Midnight
    2. To The Wonder
    3. Mud
    4. This Is The End
    5. Berberian Sound Studio

There are still a few films I want to check out like The Place Beyond The Pines, but the year has felt a bit lacking thus far.

    • Only have seen your number one, but will be checking out numbers 3 and 4. About number 5 I’m not too sure, don’t know if it is my cup of tea.

You should check out Place Beyond the Pines…really a beautiful movie.

  9. Should I be embarrassed to admit I have seen 33 new releases so far? It’s been a pretty weak year this far, but that’s the way it goes in the first half of the year in the current state of things:
    1. Before Midnight (A)
    2. Side Effects (A-)
    3. Stories We Tell (B+)
    4. To the Wonder (B+)
    5. Like Someone In Love (B+)

    • 33 new releases is pretty good I think. Don’t know how many 2013 movies I have seen, would need to check. Side Effects was pretty good and I heard great things about Stories We Tell (already on my to watch list for a while since I’m waiting for it to be released here). Have not heard of your number 5, so will note that one down.

  10. We saw all the movies nominated for Oscars earlier this year in one long weekend (total cinematic immersion experience) but I think it’s a draw between A Late Quartet and Red 2. Very different movies, very different “feel” … which is why I can’t decide.

  11. A Late Quartet was not my thing, but I can understand your choice with your music background. Red 2 will be out soon over here, so I want to see that as I had fun with the first one.
