World War Z (2013)

World War Z (2013) review

When it comes to the zombie genre I’m pretty much an inexperienced movie watcher. If I have to make a list of movies with zombies I’ve seen it is very short: Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. I never understood the obsession with zombies but I have to admit that I really enjoyed the two movies I have seen about them. I scored both of them quite high. So now there is World War Z, which takes the concept of the zombie and gives it its own twist. These zombies are not the slow-moving undead you are used to, these are zombies with rabies, extremely quick and very aggressive as the opening of the movie quickly makes clear.

World War Z (2013) review

Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is a former UN employee who is enjoying family life with his wife and two daughters. When they get stuck in heave traffic there is sudden panic and people seem to have gone crazy. He quickly realises he’s dealing with a big threat to his family and has to defend them. He gets into contact with someone he knows from the UN who is willing to help him, but in return he will have to investigate the cause of the sudden outbreak. It’s a journey which brings him around the world.

World War Z (2013) review

World War Z is more an action movie than a horror/zombiefilm. There are tense situations and various attacks, but because of the aggression of the zombies it is a very exciting movie to watch. I have to say that the special effects here deserve to be mentioned as the shots of the zombie crowds really impressed me. The way each zombie reacts to the ones around them is impressive to see. The viciousness of them is awesome in my book as it makes them a very dangerous enemy and because of it is believable that this outbreak can spread extremely quick around the world. Brad Pitt is as solid as ever and I thought the movie really handled the relationship with his wife well, never too heavy-handed. The story moves along quickly and only really slows down towards the end, which I found slightly disappointing (it didn’t really go out with a big bang), but as there are talks about a sequel I can understand it. I would not mind a second movie as I had a blast watching this one.

    • I had not followed the issues it had during production so I was expecting to like it, but it went above my expectations. I’m sure you will be able to enjoy it!

  1. Nice one Nostra! I just recently viewed this one myself and I second your opinion. I had a blast with this and can’t wait for more.

  2. Nicely reviewed. I wasn’t as enthusiastic as yourself and found it more of a missed opportunity. There were, however, some pretty impressive moments. I guess you know about the rewrites and reshoots of the last act which is why it feels a bit tacked on and not in keeping with the rest of the film. That being said I kinda liked the last act.

    • I didn’t know anything about rewrites an reshoots until after I saw the movie and reading about it in other reviews afterwards I can explain the change of pace in the last part of the movie. Although I had no problems with it, it was a tense situation. Only thing which annoyed me was the Pepsi product placement πŸ™‚

  3. I watched this movie this weekend, and it was not that bad. Not too clued on the zombie genre?! WHY? πŸ˜› Check out Dawn of the Dead, one of the very finest, in my opinion!

    • Why? Because I’m not big on horror and never understood what’s so cool about slow moving undead people πŸ™‚ I’ll add Dawn of the Dead to my “to watch” list.

  4. I would have to say that there were two elements I liked of the movie: the last scene with Gerry in the lab and the Israeli soldier. The soldier added a depth to the movie because she was the human side of it when she was stricken with the disease and saved. And the lab scene was as suspenseful as that Mission Impossible 1 scene in the vault, hanging from the ceiling.

I did like the movie. And no, I don’t understand the whole zombie-love thing either.

    • Yeah, it was a tense situation in that lab. I also liked that bit with the Israeli soldier although I had the feeling parts of it had been cut and the relationship between the two was stronger because something more had happened, but I might be wrong.

Glad to hear other people don’t understand the love for zombies either Fumi! πŸ˜‰

  5. I really liked this film – I thought the zombie effects were really creepy and cool (I like fast zombies over slow ones) and I think the way the film zeroed down from Big Epic Apocalypse to Small Tense Corridor Running was really neat, and totally unexpected for a tentpole blockbuster.

I think I gave it an 8 in my review too, so we’re on the same page here.

    • Yeah, the change of pace was something I did not expect either but like I said in another comment, it worked for me.

Nice to see we are on the same page Rodney!

  6. I agree with you completely and I think both of our reviews suggest we liked the same things in the film. It’s not a film without faults, but it is entertaining enough that I am happy overlooking those faults. Cheers!
