The World’s End (2013)

The World's End review

I don’t know if you have the same feeling as I have, but I think 2013 has seen the release of a couple of very solid comedies. I really enjoyed watching This is the End, We’re the Millers (have not reviewed these yet) and now The World’s End can be added to that list. The comedic duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back together in another adventure, which initially doesn’t seem that thrilling.

The World's End review

When they were young Gary King (Simon Pegg), Andy Knightley (Nick Frost), Oliver Chamberlain (Martin Freeman), Steven Prince (Paddy Considine) and Peter Page (Eddie Marsan) were a close-knit group of friends. They had great times together but as they got older they lost contact with each other. Most of them managed to be successful in life, expect for Gary King. He’s struggling and holding on to his past, seemingly not wanting to grow up. This group once tried to do a pub crawl visiting 12 pubs, known as the Golden Mile. They failed, but Gary wants to get it off his bucket list and decides to convince everyone to try once again. With some trouble he manages to do so and the group heads to their old village to try once again.

The World's End review

What I really like about this movie is that it really captures that feeling of reconnecting with people and how hard that can actually be. As I’m slowly closing in on 40 you see that you do not see the friends you hung out with as much anymore. You still talk to them and get along, but do not have the same connection anymore, simply because you do not share as much anymore as you are used to. Of course those relationships have been pushed to comedic proportions and are a great source for a lot of laughs. Simon Pegg steals the show as the boy trapped in a man’s body and the story which initially starts out like a pub crawl soon turns into a pub brawl and an awesome one at that.

This movie has some amazing fights and I regularly wondered how they were shot as there are some cool camera moves during them. If you are not big on product placement than you will notice prominent advertisement for the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera/Chevy Volt. Almost every shot in the town has at least one of these cars in them (there is a shot where there are 4 or 5 and no others). In light of the story though you could say that it kind of fits, but you have to decide for yourself if this is the case. The story of the World’s End is very thrilling (there is a lot of action) once it gets up to speed (before it does you will already be laughing a lot) and it is one of those films I will be revisiting in the future. It is awesome and if you have not seen it yet you should as it is one of my favorites this year.

    • Happy to hear that. I guess when watching a movie I am more of a visual person as I never noticed which songs were playing during a movie (with some obvious exceptions)

  1. This is the End really made me laugh, but this one didn’t do it nearly as much for me. I don’t mind Simon Pegg, but I like him more in other films…like Star Trek. I kept waiting for this one to take off in a different manner and it just didn’t for me.

Glad that you liked it though my friend. You wrote a nice review for it.

    • Pegg is funny in things like Star Trek and Mission Impossible, but I think he really shines in these as well. Shame you didn’t like it as much.

      Thanks for the kind words!

  2. I agree with you; this is my favourite of the trilogy too. For exactly the same reason too, because it perfectly captures that feeling of old friendships rekindled.

It manages to do all that AND have amazing fight sequences AND a cool science-fiction conceit. One of my favourite films of the year.

  3. Nice review. I thought it was great too and I think it might be the best of the Cornetto trilogy, though I think I’d say Shaun’s my favorite. Funniest movie of 2013 thus far.

    • Thanks. I watched Shaun a couple of weeks ago, which I also enjoyed but I guess I built it up more in my mind after hearing a lot of good things about it.

Definitely one the funniest movies out this year.

  4. Great review! I’m glad you singled out the fight scenes, I thought they were very well done, especially for a comedy. They could’ve easily skimped on that, but I’m glad they didn’t.
