Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Review Captain America Winter Soldier

One of the best Marvel movies. That was my first reaction after seeing Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This really surprised me as I thought the first Captain America movie was not that good. The story about how a weak boy became a hero might have been interesting to many, but the film never hit the right notes for me. I still don’t like the fact that in that movie there was a montage of actions scenes as I thought the movie did not have enough of that. This sequel changes that all and if you were a fan of The Avengers than this movie surely will not disappoint either.

Review Captain America Winter Soldier

The movie opens in spectacular fashion with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans) needing to free hostages on a ship. Together with a team they enter the vessel and Captain America sprints around the ship like the flash, taking out enemies left and right. It sets the tone for the rest of the movie as it is filled with adrenaline filled action moments. S.H.I.E.L.D., run by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), has been able to start a big project thanks to their work in The Avengers movie, but a discovery is made which could threaten the agency’s very existence. Together with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Black Widow the Captain tries to uncover what is going on and runs into a new enemy, The Winter Soldier.

Review Captain America Winter Soldier

Although this movie is over 2 hours it flies by quickly as there are hardly any dull moments. The plot moves along at speed and has some inventive set pieces and will leave it at that to not spoil anything. Although the Marvel movies won’t be described as comedies they do have their comedic moments and small references to pop culture and this movie is no different. A small reference to War Games was one of my personal favorites.

Review Captain America Winter Soldier

As Steve Rogers comes from another era he still experiences some disconnect to modern society. Freedom during his time was different to what it is now. Communication is monitored and people seem to be more afraid. The movie tries to ask if we are really free and what can be done with all the information we share. It criticizes the way the government treats that information and at times that message might be a bit too prevalent.

With an excellent cast (Robert Redford (who took the role for his grandchildren) and Anthony Mackie are the new additions and are a joy to watch), a compelling story and amazing action sequences Captain America: The Winter Soldier really delivers. This is what everyone expects from comic book movies and this is one of the best of them.

  1. Great review. I loved the film and thought the new thriller aspect of the film took Marvel into a new Genre even if in a relatively small way. Very much looking forward to the next one 😀

  2. I must have seen a different film to everyone else, as I wasn’t all that enthused by this! I did enjoy it. But I didn’t get that post-film buzz I get from films I have really enjoyed. Definitely better than the first outing. But it still just felt like your average paint-by-numbers comic book film.

Still, the casting is always good. Chris Evans totally shines as Rogers. And Mackie was brilliant as the Falcon.

    • Also quite enjoyed Thor 2 myself. Since I did not like the first Captain America movie, so it was cool to see this one being a lot more fun for me.

  3. Good review Nostra. It goes a lot deeper than the other Marvel movies have gone to, but that still doesn’t take it away from being a fun time. Just a bit more serious than your usual, superhero-fare is all.

    • Thank you Dan. Yeah, I liked that depth and actually there was something at stake here, which I did not feel in all previous Marvel movies.

  4. Captain America has got great potential which I thought was only partly met with the first – enjoyable – film. This looks like it really hits all the right notes! Great stuff! 🙂

  5. I’m impressed continuously by how short, yet articulate your Reviews are. You are right about everything. I never noticed that the first film did have a lot more montages, than actual full on action sequences. Very interesting indeed.

I couldn’t agree more that the opening sequences fully captures the pacing of the rest of the film. Kudos for your very eloquent and precise depiction of the film Nostra!

    • Thanks so much for the kind words Shah! I personally prefer reading shorter reviews and therefore always try not to make them too long. Still thinking of ways to improve my reviews of course but I am happy with the current format.

Good to hear you also enjoyed it.
