The Unbelievers (2013)

Review The Unbelievers

The world’s religions have made (and are still making) a huge impact on the world. Wars are being fought about it and people are still discriminated because they don’t have the same religion. I see it as something which could be guide you in your life to make the right decisions, even though I’m not religious myself. The two men who are being followed in this documentary, scientists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss, want to use science to prove that there is no God and regularly discuss this with religious people.

Review The Unbelievers

The movie feels like a concert tour, in which the two men appear on various stages all over the world to discuss faith and science. They both have good arguments and are able to tell very compelling stories, but as a documentary it doesn’t work. This is because it seems to view these men as people to idolize, which I found very frustrating.

Yeah, these two men do travel a lot and “perform” in front of sold out venues, but there simply isn’t enough time spent on their discussions. The world has large groups of people who are atheists and they don’t need convincing. Still this film seems to want to praise these people for their choice. The Unbelievers would have probably worked better when more of the actual discussions on stage was shown, giving the viewer a better understanding of their beliefs. It is a missed opportunity. The reason I wanted to really check out this movie was because of the trailer which shows various famous people talking about religion, including Cameron Diaz and Werner Herzog. I wasn’t expecting that what was in the trailer was close to everything shown in the movie. The rest of the time is spent on Dawkins and Krauss. It reminded me that there was a good reason I shouldn’t be checking out trailers (which I normally don’t do). There is also no good reason to suggest watching this documentary as you are probably better of reading a book that either of these men has written.
