Fed Up (2014)

“Hi, my name is Nostra and I’m an addict” were the first thoughts that ran trough my mind after watching the documentary Fed Up. Luckily I’m not alone in this and it’s actually most of society that is as well. We all consume something which stimulates our brains even more than cocaine: sugar. I have to admit I eat candy each day, but even if you don’t chances are that you consume more of it than you actually realise, often above the daily recommended limit. There are lots of product in the supermarket which contain it, even ones you wouldn’t expect to have it.

This American documentary shows the effects sugar has on society and how the people who produce the food we consume add sugar to it because we will like it more and thus buy more of it. The impact this has on health is often forgotten. The average American has become heavier through the years and that has had an effect on the amount of health care that needs to be given. Although Michelle Obama stimulates everyone to eat less and exercise more that advice is actually wrong according to the various expert interviewed. It is a problemen which should be looked at differently. I found it shocking to find out that not eating healthy already starts at a young age and that even in schools for young children companies like Pizza Hut is responsible for the meals for these kids. That means that often there aren’t any healthy alternatives available and if there are a child is unable to choose the best one because they are bombarded with commercials for the “tasty” choice.

Of course it isn’t any news that sugar is bad for you, but Fed Up has been made very well (both visually but also by use of various infographics and interesting interviews) and it convinces you to pay more attention to what you are eating. I have watched this documentary a couple of weeks ago and it has had a lasting effect on me. I now pay lots of attention to what I eat and have cut back on juices and candy. It is surprising to see that even slices of meat contain some sugar. The fact that this documentary has managed to do so leads me to conclude that it has a very effective message, so it’s a documentary I can’t do anything but suggest you see it. Maybe it will help you as well getting rid of your addiction.
