The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story review

Maybe the name “The Sherman Brothers” won’t ring a bell with most people, but chances are that most people will know their work. They were responsible for the music in many Disney movies including Mary Poppins, Jungle Book and Winnie the Pooh. But also songs like “It’s a Small World” or “Chitty Chitty Bang”. If you look at their discography it is an impressive list. Their music is known for the joy it brings, but behind the scenes the two had some serious issues.

Those issues led to the two of them refusing to talk to each other and with Robert Sherman (the oldest one) moving to the UK. The children of the two men wanted to know what happened between them and decided to make a documentary about them. They look into their complete career, from the moment they were selling tickets to the neighbourhood children, their work together with Walt Disney and everything after. Both brothers are interviewed, as are various people they worked with.

This documentary succeeds in giving a good look into their lives and celebrates their succes, including the frustration and pain they didn’t show to the world. Unfortunately their catchy and happy music didn’t mean they dealt with each other that way. Even though they occasionally worked together, they spent as little time socially as possible. They Boys therefore succeeds in bringing you something you wouldn’t expect and therefore is worth checking out.
