Coherence (2013)

Review Coherence

I’ve always had a big preference for movies which make you think. To make it even more specific, movies which play with what reality is or in which things can’t be explained easily. Movies like Donnie Darko, Primer, Upstream Color or Under the Skin are great examples of that. It is also the reason why Mr.Nobody is still in my all time top 3 movies. Coherence is a movie which starts out normal, but quickly turns into a fascinating mystery.

Review Coherence

It’s about a group of friends who get together to have dinner on an evening in which a comet will closely fly past the earth. The evening is underway when suddenly all the lights go out. From that moment strange things start to happen. They receive a package with pictures, some they have not taken yet, people who suddenly act differently and more mysterious events. Together they try to find out what is going on.

Review Coherence

Coherence was made for a budget of only 50,000 dollars, but thanks to the strong concept with heavy science fiction and physics influences that really doesn’t matter. Just like the group of friends in the movie you want to understand what is going on and solve the mystery. When answers start coming they are very satisfying, although weird. The movie kind of reminded me of The Man From Earth, even though the concept is different, because it is about a group trying to find an explanation where each individual helps in finding it. The cast is all unknown actors, which mostly are good. If you are looking for a challenging film then Coherence is a movie you should give a chance.

  1. Excellent write up! I am a big fan of this movie, I thought it came together extremely well and it was interesting to boot. I am glad to see that you enjoyed it, definitely makes you think 🙂

  2. I’ve been wondering about this one, Nostra. I’ve only heard brief thugs about it but they have always been quite positive. I love the concept. Think I’ll definitely be giving this a go.
