The Five Senses blogathon: My entry

The Five Senses blogathon
After announcing the Five Senses blogathon I’m happy to see the reactions of various bloggers that they will join me on this new blogathon. Time to kick things of with my own entry:

Which movies/movie related things will I associate which each of the senses?

Sight

Enter the Void

Enter the Void

Although this is a movie which could just as easily be named at both the sound and touch senses I’ve chosen to feature it here. If there is one movie which really attacks your sight it is this film. If you haven’t seen this, just watch the opening of the film:

It is an overload and I strongly remember closing my eyes several time during the movie because I couldn’t handle it. As the movie is also shot from a unique perspective, basically from the eyes of the main character I think it is the perfect fit for this sense.

Sound

Trailer

Movietrailers

At first when thinking of this sense I was thinking about the introduction of sound, then about music in movies, but I finally ended up with the amazing sound mixes that are done for the movie trailers. It is amazing to hear how well various sounds are mixed together to make it something which gets your heart pumping (when it comes to the big blockbusters). I love it when the sound is loud, slowly fades away using an explosion or a deep bass to come back with a cool line or loud noise. Although I’m not a fan of trailers (usually watch them after having seen a movie, because I don’t want to be spoiled in advance) I can appreciate the way the are put together when it comes to their sound.

Taste

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Although it is impossible to get taste from movies you could of course go with food you eat while you are at the movies, which I thought be too easy (in case you are wondering it’s peanut M&M’s). Instead I decided to go with a movie which made me wish I could taste what I was seeing on screen. Recently the movie Chef managed to do that, but since I’m a big fan of sushi I had to go with this documentary about one of the best sushi chefs in the world. The way that his food is shot makes you wish you could just get some chopsticks and grab that sushi of the screen.

Smell

Pathe

Cinemas

This for me was the hardest one to pick something movie related. I didn’t want to go the obvious route, like picking a movie like Perfume. I thought outside of the screen and thought of the smell of a movie theatre. Although there is obviously a popcorn smell in almost cinema I do think that each cinema has its own distinct smells. Luckily in my town there aren’t any with bad smells, but they are all unique. It is something you don’t have when you watch a movie at home and to me it adds (even if it is just a little) a little bit to the experience of seeing a movie at the cinema.

Touch

ET

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Touch is really about the sensation, making something real to you (because you think you’d be able to touch it). I immediately had to think of E.T., not only because E.T. uses touch in the form of his magic finger to heal Elliot, but also because it gives the viewer the feel of an era. It allows you to revisit that time and get a sense of living at the beginning of the eighties. It makes you feel like a kid again because the movie is shot from their height. It is also a movie which moves me as the scene in which he is dying gets me every time. So a great fit for this sense.

So what do you think of these associations?

  1. Some great choices, here. Enter the Void is a perfect pick for sight. Having sat through it, I didn’t watch the clip you posted, though. That thing should come with a seizure warning. Nice write-up on E.T., touch is integral to that film. And yes, my mouth watered all the way through Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

    • Thanks Wendell. Enter the Void was the first thing I thought of with that sense. It should come with a seizure warning indeed! Nice to hear you feel the same about E.T. and Jiro. Looking forward to your entry to the blogathon!

  2. Jiro dreams of sushi is such a good doc, and that pic you use just made my mouth water a bit (although i rarely eat them due to my allergy). And now you tempt me to go to watch the Void. XD

    Will post mine soon-ish!

    • Hahaha, I love sushi and looking at that picture again I’m almost tempted to head out of the house (there is a sushi place about 5 minutes from my house). I’m warning you for Enter the Void, there are moments that will shock you…

  3. Great picks all around, Nostra. The more I think about this, the more possibilities I come up with. I agree with you about the trailers, and I would say that for me it’s also the sound of the opening titles, like the MGM lion’s roar, for example.

    • Thanks Claire 🙂 Yeah, it is one of those things where you keep thinking of other things and realise movies are more than just images and some sound 🙂
