My Filmviews Top 100 Films: 50-41

Top 100 50-41

This week we start with the second half of the top 100, with the numbers 50 to 41. Which titles are part of the list this time?

50. Léon

Luc Besson might not currently make the same kind of movies as he did in 1994, but this movie about an assassin (Jean Reno) who decides to take care of Mathilda (a very young, but impressive Natalie Portman) and trains her how to kill is a masterpiece. Gary Oldman is also worth mentioning in his very enjoyable “over the top” performance as Stansfield. [My review]

49. Singin’ in the Rain

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Singin in the rain[/mlprx]
Most people will know the title song, but the number of those who have actually seen the film is probably a lot lower. That’s a shame as this is a fantastic movie from start to finish, with wonderful Technicolor imagery, great music and impressive dance sequences. A great musical. [My review]

48. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Cinema Paradiso[/mlprx]
If you are a fan of film than this is one of those movies which manages to capture that magic of it as an artform perfectly. The story about a small village and its community who all visit the local cinema but also shows the life of one of its inhabitants is nothing but pure joy.[My review]

47. Good Will Hunting

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Recensie Good Will Hunting[/mlprx]
This is movie which I hadn’t seen for years, but after the unexpected death of Robin Williams decided to revisit. I had forgotten how good this was, thanks to amazing performances by both Williams and Damon.[My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

46. The Shining

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]theshining1[/mlprx]
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you will know that horror really isn’t my genre. It was the reason that I didn’t watch The Shining for a very long time. Out of curiosity I eventually decided to check it out and I regret not seeing it sooner. It has breathtaking shots (like the opening shot from a helicopter or the scene in which the camera follows the kid around). A movie with a very interesting story too, which deserves to been several times.[My review]

45. The Staircase

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]staircase1[/mlprx]
For fans of The Jinx this is a documentary series you can’t miss. Each episode builds on the previous one, bringing out more bizarre details about this case, in which the wife of writer Michael Peterson is found in her own blood at the bottom of a staircase. Is he guilty or was it an accident? [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

44. The Matrix

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Matrix[/mlprx]
Although the two sequels had their moments, they didn’t manage to meet expectations set by the original film. The concept of this film wasn’t only original, but also relevant (and still is). Combined with special effects that were groundbreaking it is a movie which has left a lasting impression on cinema.

43. My Sassy Girl

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]My Sassy Girl[/mlprx]
No, this is not the very disappointing American remake, but the original South Korean film. It’s an original romantic comedy in which a very dominant girl manages to turn the world of clumsy Gyeon-woo around which results in a lot of laughs for the viewer. [My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

42. Life is beautiful

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Life is Beautiful[/mlprx]
A film which starts out as a light comedy but slowly changes into a drama when you witness the effects the second world war has on a father and his son who are sent to a camp. A movie with a lot of emotional impact.[My review]

[mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”400″]

41. Grumpy Old Men

[/mlprx][mlprx effect=”fadeInRight” delay=”450″]Grumpy Old Men[/mlprx]
My favorite comedic duo is Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau and from all the movies I’ve seen of them this is my favorite. I love see them play out their love-hate friendship, with comedic results. Burgess Meredith is also a highlight in his role as the father.[My review]

  1. Thanks for recognizing The Matrix. I like So. Korean cinema, but I’ve never seen one of their rom-coms. Sounds interesting.

I might be the only, but Life is Beautiful just doesn’t do it for me.

    I love 46, 47, 49, and especially 50.

  2. Nice to see The Matrix and Cinema Paradiso made your Top 50! I love both of those. Life is beautiful is definitely a haunting film you won’t soon forget.

  3. “Grumpy Old Men,” another great atypical Top-10 choice. It should be on the list alone for the Burgess Meredith outtakes at the end where he lists all the possible names for a penis.

The end of “Cinema Paradiso” always makes my eyes water.
