The Many Faces of… Andy Serkis

Andy Serkis roles movies

Andy Serkis is an actor who, ever since the Lord of the Rings movies, has been the face of motion capture. He has played various characters which, through a combination of his amazing talent and the talent of the animators who turn that performance into a digital character (whether that’s Gollum, King Kong or Caesar for example), have been extremely memorable and believable. Often people forget that he has also acted in various other movies, with his own face, without digital magic. Time to have a look at the roles of Andy Serkis.

He was born 20 April 1964 in London. He went to Lancaster University where he chose to study visual arts. His secondary subject was theatre, but he chose this so he could design posters. He was part of the radio team and eventually got involved in designing and producing plays. When he agreed to act in of the plays he liked it so much that he decided to make acting his major subject. After graduation he continued acting on stage. He slowly moved into television as well. He became famous for his role as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies and played in movies like 24 Hour Party People, King Kong, The Prestige, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Adventures of Tin Tin, Godzilla and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He will also have a part in the new Star Wars movie and will play Baloo in the new Junglebook movie.

  1. Hard to name my favorite work of his. I’m just happy the man is getting recognition for a type of cinematic artistry that often gets pushed under the table. He brings so much to his roles. My hat is always off to Andy Serkis!

    • Yeah, he has shown what can be done with the technology and is pushing for it to be recognised and I do think that awareness and appreciation is there for it

  2. That’s easy. Gollum in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. As for non-CGI performance, as the late Martin Hannett in 24 Hour Party People.

He got that person down to a hilt. “Recording…. silence”. “You recording silence?” “No I’m recording Tony fookin’ Wilson”

    • Yeah, it is the most obvious choice and I completely agree with you. Haven’t seen 24 Hour Party People, but when I first saw the pictures of him in it I hardly recognised him.

  3. Great feature Nostra, not least because many new audiences will not know what Serkis looks like given his work with CGI characters. But what characters such as Gollum have shown is actually what a great actor he is. There aren’t many that can do what he does, and the diverse nature of his roles in the last ten years is really incredible.
