The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014)

Review Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1

The number of movie franchises which are focussed on the “young adults” market keeps steadily growing. The Hunger Games movies always felt like they had a little bit of an edge over the competition. The were more raw, which isn’t a surprise with its strong resemblance to Battle Royale. Each movie manage to raise the tension. When this movie played in theaters I didn’t manage to go out and see it, but was looking forward to what this franchise would bring next.

After Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) succeeded to sabotage and escape the game in the previous movie, this should be the movie in which the revolution against president Snow and his regime would start. But as the title already mentions this is another one of those movies which annoyingly has jumped the bandwagon of cutting movies which should be complete into two separate parts. Not only that, but also have them released a year after each other. Look, I understand the financial decision to do this, but if you want to split them and still earn the same money do something different and release both movies at the same time and leave it up to the viewer to watch them back to back or not.

The result of splitting the movie has resulted in something which seems to run on repeat. Katniss wants to see the consequences of the destruction in various zones, looks sad, goes back to the rebel base and does the same thing again later. She has to be the face of the revolution, but seems very hard to “market”. Amongst the rebels there is even a discussion whether she should get that role. Because of all the repetition and boring politics this two hour movie feels artificially long without much happening. I was really looking forward to the conclusion of this franchise, but this film has managed to decrease my enthusiasm.

  1. That is the main issue with this movie: it lacks the action and decent conclusion of the first two. I think The Hunger Games themselves are the best part of the series so losing that completely means the movie struggles. Looking forward to, hopefully amore action focused final movie.

  2. I just caught up with this one myself. I agree with you for the most part. I actually like some of the political back-and-forths but we don’t need this much of it. It was clearly stretched out in order to squeeze two movies out.
