Do you sometimes know that feeling? That a movie has a specific element which completely keeps you from enjoying it? On paper Home is a movie I should be able to enjoy: Fun characters, funny situations and lots of science fiction fantasy. Unfortunately the movie turned out different for me.

In Home we see how an alien race, the Boov has been on the run from their biggest enemy, Gorg, for years. Every time they find out that Gorg has located them again, they are forced to move to another planet. The planet they have picked out now is earth and when they decide to start living somewhere everything and everyone has to move. They land on our planet, take everyone prisoner and start living their lives in the abandoned cities. Everything which isn’t of use to the Boov they erase and they once again seem safe.

Oh (Jim Parsons) is an alien who is slightly different compared to the rest. He is a little more adventurous, doesn’t always comply to their rules and wants to try new things. When he accidentally sends an invitation for a party to everyone in the universe, making the Boov once again feel unsafe. His people decide to try and capture him so he can’t make any other mistakes, but Oh decides to flee where he meets Tip (Rihanna). Thanks to her cat she wasn’t taken, but she’s trying to survive and wants to find her mother. Although the two can’t get along both Tip and Oh are forced to work together to reach their own goals.

The biggest problem I had with the movie was Rihanna. Although her voice work is great, her voice simply doesn’t fit the character. When that character is the main one and you don’t buy that character the rest of the movie quickly fell apart for me. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood, but the jokes felt very predictable and aimed at kids. It resulted in a movie which unfortunately didn’t manage to entertain me enough and left me very disappointed.

  1. Initially I thought this was going to be a cute kind of movie. It was, until the novelty wore off and I was starting to get antsy toward the end. There wasn’t much of content to keep this going; it felt like it was just going back and forth, making it seem longer than usual.
