Jessica Jones (2015) – Season 1 – Review

review Jessica Jones season 1

I’m someone who did not grow up reading comics. I occasionally read Donald Duck or Spike and Suzy, but I did head to to the bookstore every week to buy them. The Marvel comics therefore never registered with me and I wasn’t really interested in them. But thanks to all the movies and series in recent years, I understand why people love the Marvel comics. Every superhero does have his/her own characteristics, which means there is always one which appeals to you. After seeing Deadpool last week it did make me interested in reading comics with him. Through the films and the various series you get to know these characters and the quality of them is usually high. After the fantastic Daredevil it released the next super hero at the end of last year: Jessica Jones.

Review Jessica Jones

The fact that Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is different becomes clear very quickly during the first episodes: She’s a detective who drinks a lot, almost has no bond with other and struggles with events from her past. Because of her abilities (she is incredibly strong and can jump high) she isn´t afraid to get into dangerous situations. She has one obsession, which is finding Killgrave (David Tennant), who kept literally kept her under his control. Now she wants revenge and prevent others from experiencing the same as she did.

“one that certainly is worth checking out…”

If after seeing Daredevil you come in expecting the same from this show you will probably be disappointed as this lacks in action. This is more of a detective series with occasional superhero elements, but one that certainly is worth checking out. That is mainly because of the presence of Killgrave. This is a villain who can control others and can make them do anything he says. In my opinion that makes him one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever seen and David Tennant is phenomenal in that role. He is menacing, obsessive and does not seem to have any empathy with what he brings about. My feeling is that if Jessica had to fight someone else the show probably would not have been as interesting. Jessica herself isn´t a very fascinating. She came across as very one-dimensional because Ritter always plays her with the same expression.

However, this first season is entertaining and introduces several new characters, including Luke Cage (Mike Colter), who will have his own series. The web of superhero-related shows and movies continues to expand and although I do hear people talking about getting bored by them, I have not reached that point yet. Especially if they are of the same level as this series.

  1. David Tennant was brilliant….the Luke Cage character is a awesome intro to a sweet story line…..this series is just super sweeeeeet!

  2. While I don’t watch a lot of TV drama until I can blitz through it on DVD or when an entire series is available to stream/download through my TV provider, Jessica Jones intrigues because of Krysten Ritter who I thought was terrific in Breaking Bad. I do want to see more of her work.

    • That’s the great thing about Netflix, everything is available at once (for most shows anyway) so that really helps starting something. I too don’t have the patience to have to wait and it is nice to decide when you will watch it. I liked her in Breaking Bad as well, but I thought the character here could have had a little more to her.

  3. I have about 4 more episodes to go on this one. 7 sounds like a fair grade, I think Netflix’s Daredevil is superior to this, I’d give that one a 9/10.
