Sisters (2016) – Review

Review Sisters

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have gained quite a number of fans with their appearances on SNL and their movie Baby Mama. That’s mainly the case in the US, because over in Europe the two of them aren’t as well known. Amy Poehler did play in a lot of tv shows and has been responsible for voice work in movies like Inside Out, Monsters vs Aliens, Horton and Shrek the Third. Tina Fey probably is better known thanks to movies like Date Night and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. The two have hooked up again for Sisters and the question is whether or not that has resulted in a great comedy.

Review Sisters

Maura (Amy Poehler) and Kate (Tina Fey) are two sisters who unexpectedly get to hear from their parents that they will be selling the house they grew up in. They have to head home in order to clean out their rooms. The two of them are in shock and don’t want it to be sold as so many memories are attached to that place. When they finally go through their stuff they find their old diaries. Kate used to be wild when she was young, which wasn’t the case for Maura. They decide to throw one final party during which Maura can act irresponsibly. The invite everyone they still know from school and that means a lot of unresolved issues come up they’ll have to deal with.

“competently made comedy…”

It takes a bit long for the movie to really get going. The jokes at the beginning miss their mark and it is when the party starts that it all picks up. As you would expect not everything goes according to plan and the situations the two sisters end up in form a great sources for jokes. John Cena has been appearing in several comedies lately and he’s hilarious here as a tough drug dealer. Sisters might not be memorable, but it is a competently made comedy that’s fun to watch.
