The neverending comebacks of The Terminator

There’s something a little ironic about a time-travelling movie franchise like The Terminator continuing to make surprising comebacks despite critical maulings and dwindling audience numbers.

But in a way it makes sense as the clever time-travel conceit allows the murderous cyborgs to continually travel back to the present, and with calls for a return for the TV spin-off and even online casino games dedicated to the franchise, it’s no real surprise to find that there’s a Terminator 6 movie in the works.

The story leaked earlier this year when Arnold Schwarzenegger told an Australian television network that he was looking forward to the next Terminator movie. This caused shockwaves across the internet as the parent company Paramount Pictures reportedly pulled the plug on the planned sequel to Terminator: Genisys after disappointing US box office statistics.

And whilst the Genisys film may have suffered from negative reviews, it was actually a pretty good movie that should have opened the door to a string of successful sequels. But with the reports that its star actress Emilia Clarke won’t be returning to the franchise, it leaves many questions unanswered about what we can expect from The Terminator.

The Genisys movie certainly left us with a big cliffhanger upon its conclusion. And although the brand has enjoyed plenty of interesting adaptions in the forms of TV shows and the Terminator 2 slot game at the online casino on Betsafe’s gaming website, there’s no indication of where the franchise will go next.

Even the highly-rated television spin-off The Sarah Connor Chronicles seems to be lost in the contractual backwaters at Warner Bros, and although there’s a well-intentioned campaign to bring it back, it seems unlikely that we’ll see a return of the series anytime soon.

However there is still hope for cyborgs on our screen in the near future as the Genisys movie reportedly performed extremely well in foreign markets like China. And with the creator James Cameron gaining the rights back on the franchise in 2019, it’s hoped that the iconic director could reanimate the Terminator’s corpse soon.

This is especially so as it was reported that the franchise’s co-creator Gale Ann Hurd would be willing to collaborate with Cameron and bring back the Terminator for a new generation of fans. But with years to pass before contractual obligations expire, it looks like it’s the online games that will be the best chance of seeing the Terminator on our screens at the moment.

  1. I was a big fan of the Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show; it surprised me that the concept fit a series so well. They did some interesting things with the Terminator idea and time travel. I wasn’t as thrilled by Genisys. I liked the first act with the familiar scenes from the first two movies seen again. Once the real villain was revealed, it grew pretty tired. Still, I’m curious to see what would happen with another film. With the exception of Salvation, all of the films have brought something to the table.

  2. I actually think this is a franchise that should be put to an end now. The last three sequels all underperformed at the box office, which means most people just don’t care about this franchise anymore. But being that Hollywood can’t let go of a once popular franchise, we’ll likely see a movie or TV version of it soon.

BTW, I thought Genisys was probably as bad as T3.

  3. I wish they’d just bring back the old movies to theaters for like an anniversary special or something instead of making these terribly mediocre reboots/remakes.
