Gomorra: Season 2 – Review

Review gomorra seizoen 2

Season 1 of Gomorra managed to show the fascinating world in which mob boss Don Pietro Savastano, his son Genny and Ciro Di Marzio slowly got into a struggle for power in the streets of Naples. It is a show which is raw and also spends a lot of time depicting the lives of the people hustling in the street. It gives it all a very realistic feel. So I was really looking forward to this second season to find out more about what would happen after the battle at the end of the first season.

review gomorra seizoen 2

This second season continues with the most important characters from the original, but because of the events that took place before the balance of power is different. Every episode focusses more on one character and his development. It changes the feeling of the show slightly. It works though because it adds to the overall story. You understand the consequences on the bigger story when one seemingly unimportant character decides to do something he shouldn’t. The show has a lot of power plays, violent killings and lot of political manipulation. It is an unpredictable game of chess which is a joy to watch. It all results in a thrilling ending which is really satisfying.

With various new characters Gomorra feels fresh, while the old characters form the foundation to build on. With its bleak setting and criminal atmosphere it offers enough to enjoy to every fan of the mafia genre.
