Kong: Skull Island (2017) – Review

Recensie Kong Skull Island

To me the original 1933 King Kong remains the ultimate King Kong movie, one which was way ahead of its time. Despite its age and many other films which has depicted this prehistoric monster it is still great to watch. When watching monster movies you can only hope for characters to survive, because there realistically isn’t anything which can stop them. That’s also the case for the creatures in Kong: Skull Island (which you could call the real “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)

Review Kong Skull Island

It is the end of seventies and the end of the Vietnam war has been announced. For scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman) it means a last chance to do research on a mysterious, remote undiscovered island, financed by the government. He manages to get a team together in order to reach this place. Adventurer and guide James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) and a group of soldiers led by Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson), who is frustrated because the war has ended and he hasn’t won. Once they reach the island by helicopter they quickly discover that they aren’t alone and the group will have to try to survive.

“lots of spectacle…”

Kong: Skull Island is a movie which won’t disappoint fans of monster movies. Kong turns out to not be the only danger and thanks to some convincing special effects they are all brought to life. Just like the characters you have no idea what is about to happen and any character might not survive the next scene. The cast is impressive, with lots of familiar faces. You do wonder sometimes why some characters are in the movie (like Randa’s assistants), as they don’t add anything at all. The movie offers lots of spectacle (and jump scares) and is pure entertainment. Despite the unnecessary conclusion during the end credits I really enjoyed this film. It gave me exactly what I expected from this type of movie.

  1. Interesting to see you enjoyed it! I watched this movie last night. To me it was kind of a stupid movie with some funny aspects, but I know many people will probably love this movie. Therefore it’s always nice to see the opinion of other filmbloggers šŸ™‚ I agree with you on some characters that didn’t add anything! But I think they just enjoyed their time with the famous actors on the set haha!
