Power Rangers (2017) – Review

Review Power Rangers

Although many of us grew up with watching the Power Rangers, it never was something I found appealing. I thought it was a bit weird and hardly watched it. Still I was curious of a movie based on the show, because what would this be turned into with a much bigger budget. Would it make it all more convincing?

Review Power Rangers

Power Rangers is an origin story in which five teenagers, each with their own issues, happen to meet each other and discover mysterious colored coins which give them special powers. They also discover a spaceship and get to hear that they have been chosen as the new Rangers, who need to protect the earth against Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).

“surprising and succesful transition to film…”

I must admit that before watching this movie I went in with extremely low expectations. Maybe that’s the reason it managed to surprise me. This movie is directed by Dean Israelite, who previously was responsible for the very enjoyable Project Almanac. Here he takes his time to introduce the characters and have them go through things together, creating a natural feeling bond between them. It also makes you care for them as a viewer. It means that the film doesn’t have as much action as you might suspect, which mainly happens during the last 30 minutes. And to be honest it’s the most disappointing part, as it feels like your basic final battle you’ve seen in dozens of big action and superhero movies. Despite that Power Rangers turned out to be a guilty pleasure film for me. It definitely is a one you should have seen…but still I did lose myself for a moment it creates. So for me it is a surprising and succesful transition to film.
