Bushwick (2017) – Review

Review Bushwick

Not every film is a masterpiece, but that is not necessary. It is sometimes wonderful to just watch a stupid comedy or simple action movie. When those kind of movies can entertain you, they have achieved their goal. I did not know in advance what I could expect from this action film, in which Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow play the main roles, but I was able to have a great time with it.

Review Bushwick

Lucy (Brittany Snow) is on her way to her grandmother with her boyfriend. They are in Brooklyn, but when they get off the subway they quickly realize that something strange is going on. It seems to be too quiet and when they walk up the stairs to the street they find out why. The neighborhood seems to have turned into a war zone and it does not take long for Lucy is on her own. There is a lot of violence in the streets, people are executed and nowhere seems to be safe. Yet she wants to go to her grandmother to make sure she is still ok. She runs into the wrong people and does not seem to be able to escape until she is rescued by an ex-marine (Bautista). Their goal is to leave the Bushwick neighborhood and survive.

“for fans of action movies…”

Bushwick is not a complicated film, simply two people trying to get somewhere without being shot. Yet the way everything is filmed is worth mentioning. The directors have tried to make it all look like one continuous shot (as in Birdman). Although it is clear where the breaks between shots are hidden I found it amusing to see it in a film like this. The soundtrack by Aesop Rock is worth mentioning as it’s really good and I also found the end to be refreshing, although that might not appeal to everyone. For fans of action movies a nice title to watch.
