Songs from the Second Floor (2000)

Review Songs from the Second Floor

When I recently saw the movie A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence by Roy Anderson it was a unique experience. Each scene was filmed from a fixed perspective, without any camera movements. What happened in front of the camera often was bizarre and surreal. It isn’t often you see a whole army that lived centuries ago walking into a bar in a modern setting or a movie that shows the life of two salesmen trying to sell comedy items. Although that movie had characters and dialog which regularly returned, its structure was unconventional. A film which makes you look differently at the medium. I didn’t know yet that this movie was the third on in a trilogy, which started with this one, Songs from the Second Floor. Continue reading

Almost Famous (2000)

Review Almost Famous 2015 small blindspotSo to start the year strong I thought it was a good idea to kick off the year with watching one of my “Blindspot” movies for 2015. I had never watched it and the only thing I read about it that it had to do with the rock scene. As that really isn’t my genre of music I never watched it. But as these things go I kept seeing it being reviewed positively by other bloggers and decided to add it to my “to watch” list and have now come around to seeing it.

Not knowing anything about it I was very surprised going in to see the amount of names of well-known actors who are in this movie: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Frances McDormand, Billy Crudup, Zooey Deschanel and Jason Lee to name just a few. And it turned out those names aren’t the only good thing about this film. Continue reading

Red Planet (2000)

Review of the movie Red Planet

Mars has long been an interesting resource for movies. Usually that means that aliens are coming from the planet to attack the earth. Red Planet doesn’t take that idea and is set more in reality. It’s about a group of people sent to Mars. Earth is slowly becoming inhabitable and the seeds had been planted to create an atmosphere to make it a new home, but things didn’t go as planned and a crew is sent to the planet to find out why. I never saw Red Planet before and when it showed up on my VOD service I decided to check it out. Continue reading

Frequency (2000)

There are some movies which never got the credit they deserved and I think Frequency is one of those movies. I would probably have never heard of it if I hadn’t watched on a plane to Miami in 2000. It was a movie I fondly remembered, but never got around to rewatching. Finally was able to get around to that and it’s as good as I remember. Continue reading

Paradise Lost trilogy (1996 / 2000 / 2011)

On May 5, 1993 three boys (all of the age of eight) were reported missing in West Memphis, Arkansas. The boys were later found murdered and left in a muddy area in Robin Hood Hills. The police investigated the case and eventually arrested Jessie Misskelley (17), Jason Baldwin (16) and Damien Echols (18). This documentary trilogy looks into the case and makes for a very interesting watch. Continue reading

The 6th Day (2000)

The 6th Day review

A while ago I really felt like revisiting Schwarzeneggers Last Action Hero. I ordered the DVD and it came with another movie of his, The 6th Day. Having seen it now I’m still not completely sure if I had seen it before, but if I had I had forgotten almost all of it. Continue reading

Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme (2000)

If someone would hand you a piece of paper and would tell you that you’d have a minute to write down a poem, would you be able to write one that makes sense? What if you didn’t have the piece of paper and had to think of something on the spot. It would need to rhyme, have a rhythm and a flow, would you be able to do that? This is the world of the freestyle, in which rappers show how quickly they can think, say it and at the same time tell a story. It’s something which takes a lot of practice and when you are thinking of the next thing to say your mind is in a different place compared to what your mouth is doing (saying something you already thought up). This documentary focusses on the freestyle and does this the best way possible: By interviewing a lot of artists and show lots of freestyles. Continue reading

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

The next movie out of the IMDB top 250 which I have seen is Requiem for a Dream. I tried watching it years ago, but could not get into it and didn’t finish watching it. I just didn’t like the vibe it gave me. It’s now some years later and seeing it in the top 250 i was curious about it, so i decided to give this film another chance. I’m glad i did. Continue reading
