The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)

Review The Time Travelers Wife
Even though time travel movies is considered a separate genre, it is quite easy to make further distinctions within it. They can be adventurefilms, comedies or mysteries, but there are several of them which focus on romance. My favorites about the subject are About Time and the Christopher Reeve film Somewhere in Time. The Time Traveler’s Wife was a title which I hadn´t seen yet, but had been wanting to for a very long time. Does this movie starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams manage to get a spot as one of my favorites? Continue reading

The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story (2009)

The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story review

Maybe the name “The Sherman Brothers” won’t ring a bell with most people, but chances are that most people will know their work. They were responsible for the music in many Disney movies including Mary Poppins, Jungle Book and Winnie the Pooh. But also songs like “It’s a Small World” or “Chitty Chitty Bang”. If you look at their discography it is an impressive list. Their music is known for the joy it brings, but behind the scenes the two had some serious issues. Continue reading

Obstruction 4: Mr. Nobody (2009)

Review of Mr. Nobody

For my entry for Obstruction 4 in the 5 Obstructions blogathon I decided to rewatch and review (and analyze) a movie which is in my all time favorite top 3 (the other two are Pulp Fiction and Black Swan). There are many reasons I love this movie, but I’ll get to that later. The obstruction itself I though was quite challenging and it did make me look at the movie in more detail, something which I did not mind at all.

Mr. Nobody was the feature length movie Belgian director Jaco van Dormael made since 1996. According to Wikipedia he had been trying to film the movie since 2001. When he finally managed to get financing it turned out that he would be making the most expensive Belgian movie ever made with an estimated budget of €33 million (US$47 million).

When writing the film van Dormael was influenced by movies like Run Lola Run and Sliding Doors. He wanted it to be more complicated than those movies and look at life as a whole and in his words “the abyss of infinite possiblities” that offers and that is exactly was he has managed to do with this movie. It is a movie which unfortunately is not widely known and one I always recommend to people first when they ask me about a movie they should check out. Continue reading

3 Idiots (2009)

Review of the movie 3 Idiots

In general I don’t tend to watch many movies from India. I have seen a few, but the length is a major factor as is the fact that these movies tend to be very different (usually with lot of singing) means I often don’t connect as much to them. If you look at the IMDB top 250 there aren’t many Indian movies on the list. Actually there is only one and as I do like to still watch as many out of the list as I can I decided to check this one out. Continue reading

Special When Lit (2009)

Before there were videogames there was pinball and it was a huge industry, even bigger than the entire American movie industry during the 50s and 60s if this documentary is to be believed. You could find pinball machines in all sort of places. They have now disappeared (well, you can still get them on your iPad although it’s not the same) and this movie tries to teach the viewer about its history and the enthusiasts who still care about them (and collect them). I did play quite a bit of pinball during the nineties, so I was interested in the story this documentary had to tell. Continue reading

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (2009)

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt review

It’s been a while since I saw a Michael Douglas movie I enjoyed. A while ago a DVD store near me had a big sale and going through stack and stacks of DVDs trying to find my personal treasures I found Beyond a Resonable Doubt. The cover looked cool, it had Michael Douglas in it and it seemed to be a courtroom drama. Worth seeing right? Continue reading

Mary and Max (2009)

Looking at the screenshot above you might not know what to think of this movie. I probably would not have giving this movie a chance if I hadn’t seen it in the IMDB top 250. It made me curious about it, but didn’t get around to ordering it (usually buy my movies online). As I strolled through town I saw it in the window of a small record store and immediately went in to buy it. So is it any good? Continue reading

Away We Go (2009)

Becoming parents is one of the big changes in your life and Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are on the brink of experiencing it. Verona is six months pregnant and they are getting ready for it. They have moved near Burt’s parents and when they pay them a visit find out that they are planning to move to Belgium just before the baby is due. It’s a big shock for them and they decide there is no reason to stay where they are and search for a new place to settle. Continue reading

Pulling John (2009)

Do you know the above athlete? He has been at the top of his sports for years and a lot of his competitors don’t consider themselves good until they are able to beat him. If I say you might recognise him from the Sylvester Stallone movie Over the Top where he had a cameo. His name is John Brzenk and he is a professional arm wrestler and together with two other arm wrestlers he stars in this documentary about the world of arm wrestling. Continue reading
