Stealing Time (2011) – Short movie review

review Stealing Time

The creativity of the human mind know no limits and it’s always fascinating to see what is being invented, but also which theories we think of about things we can’t even see. It appeals to the imagination and the best movies normally also manage to do that. Whether it was the first Matrix movie which did that on a technical level or Black Swan which did that emotionally. A favorite subject of mine has always been time travel as it enables you to dream about both the future and the past, so it’s no surprise I keep searching for new movies I have not seen. Stealing Time was one of them. Continue reading

Everything is a remix (2011)

Everything is a remix review

First thing you might be thinking when you read that title on a movie blog is that this is a movie about how there isn’t much originality when it comes to movies. You’d be partly right as this documentary shows, but Everything is a Remix covers more than only movies and in three parts it looks at inventions, music, movies and patents to prove that new inventions might not always be original, but it is the combination of ideas which can lead to breakthroughs. Continue reading

Highway Gospel (2011)

Before watching this documentary I had never heard of longboarding. It’s a sport in which someone takes a very long skateboard and race down a hill. It’s a high risk thing to do, but as this documentary shows it is a high adrenaline one and the people doing it are very passionate about it. Continue reading

Unraveled (2011)

Review of the documentary Unraveled

When you hear the name Bernie Madoff, you probably immediately think about a white-collar criminal who lost his clients billions of dollars (an estimated 18 of them). The name Marc Dreier might not be known, but Madoff is the reason you might not know him. Only shortly after Marc Dreier was arrested everyone started looking at Madoff, but Dreier also was caught for financial crimes (also hundreds of millions). He did so with his law firm and over the years managed to get more money then he should have by fraudulent behaviour. The risks he was taking were getting bigger and bigger and because of the financial crisis he was finally caught. This documentary was shot when he was under house arrest awaiting his trial and has him talking about what he did and how he feels about it. Continue reading

Tricked (2013)

Tricked review

After Black Book (2006) movie lovers had to wait a while for the next Paul Verhoeven movie. Two years ago he decided to take part in the “Ziggo Entertainment Experience”, a new concept and a new way of making movies, which he hadn’t done before. The idea behind this “Experience” was that only the first five pages of the script would be written by a professional script writer, in this case Kim van Kooten. Those pages would be made available, after which it was up to the “crowd” (or “users”) to write the rest of the script, come up with new ideas, make the music, promote the concept or simply vote on the ideas of others. Ziggo (a Dutch cable company) created an online platform which would make this possible and make it available to anyone. The movie was made in 8 episodes, which means time was needed between each episode to decide what the script would be. Has Paul Verhoeven, by using this new concept, succeeded in making a movie worth watching? Continue reading

The Island President (2011)

As many of you know I live in the Netherlands. It’s a country which is mostly below sea level, but through good watermanagement the dutch have managed to keep it all dry. I personally live at one of the lowest points of the country (more than 6 meters below sea level), so this documentary was an interesting watch. President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives also has an issue with water, only he has the problem that his country consists of many small islands and as the sea level is slowly increasing and washing away parts of the country he’s got a very big problem. If nothing is done the country will disappear under the sea. This documentary looks at his struggle to convince other countries to change the CO2 emissions to slow down the effects global warming has on the sea level. Continue reading

Guns, Girls and Gambling (2011)

Review of the movie Guns, Girls and Gambling 2011 film

When you look at the career of any actor or actress there are always these movies you would never expect them to appear in. I never expected Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, Jeff Goldblum in Death Wish or Seth Rogen in Donnie Darko. When I saw that Gary Oldman was starring in this movie as Elvis I just had to check it out. He’s a true chameleon and I was interested to see what he would do with the role, but with a title like that my expectations of the movie itself were very low. Continue reading

Shuffle (2011)

There are some concepts in movies I just can’t get enough of, one of them is the manipulation of time. Whether it’s a story being told in reverse in Memento, travelling in time in Back to the Future, exploring various timelines in Mr.Nobody or getting stuck in time loops in Timecrimes, they always fascinate me. They can sometimes be difficult to grasp and challenge the viewer. It’s exactly that fact I love about them. Shuffle is a movie that I can add to this list as its time related premise is another unique one. Continue reading

Bernie (2011)

I originally wasn’t planning to watch Bernie. Not because I don’t like Jack Black as I think he’s usually pretty entertaining, but the movie just didn’t seem that appealing. I normally don’t watch trailers, but watching part of one made me decide I’d skip this one. That’s until I saw a lot of positive reviews coming into my mailbox. It seemed I had dismissed a movie I shouldn’t have, so I was set on “righting” that wrong and decided to check it out. Continue reading
