Stand Up Guys (2012)

Sometimes there are these movies where you see just one still and you are excited to watch it. A couple of months ago a set photo of Christopher Walken and Al Pacino appeared which was on my desktop for a while. It showed Pacino walking weirdly and Walken with his pants higher than they should be and i thought it was hilarious. I didn’t read anything else about the movie as that single image sold the movie for me. My expectation was that i was going to be entertained. It’s a shame I wasn’t. Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Al Pacino

An overview in pictures of the roles of actor Al Pacino in most of his movies

Pacino was born in 1940 and grew up in the Bronx. He dropped out of school at 17 and did a lot of small jobs to finance something he wanted to do, acting. He joined the Herbert Berghof Studio where he learned a lot from Charlie Laughton. With his experience there he applied to the Actors Studio and was admitted. He did some plays before making the jump to movies.

The first film he appeared in was Me, Natalie in 1969, with only a small role. He got noticed and his big breakthrough came when he played Michael Corleone in The Godfather (which was only his third movie role), which got him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He later received other Oscar nominations for his roles in Dick Tracy, …And Justice for All, Glengarry Glen Ross, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon and Scent of a Woman. You don’t know Jack (2010)

The name Jack Kevorkian, also known as Doctor Death, is a very famous name. I did not know much about him though. HBO has made a movie about the work of this doctor. It gives insight into his way of thinking and why he did what he did. He helped at least 130 people (most terminally ill or without will to continue living because of their pain). Since 2002 euthanasia has been a legal process in the Netherlands, for which strict rules have to be followed before a patient can be helped with dying. In America however, it’s not legal. Kevorkian decided to try to make it legal to enable a grown up person to decide for himself if he wants to continue living or if he/she wants to die. Lees verder
