Lost in Translation (2003)

Review of Lost in Translation

At the beginning of the year one of my goals would be to rewatch more movies than I did last year. In general I tend to prefer watching movies I have not seen yet, but revisiting movies which you have seen is like meeting an old friend you have not spoken to in a long while. You might wonder if you still enjoy their presence as much as before and I had that feeling with Lost in Translation. Continue reading

Hyde Park on Hudson (2012)

Hyde Park On Hudson review

Hyde Park on Hudson isn’t a title which will mean much to you if you don’t know much of American history (like I did). The title references the house president Roosevelt had near New York. It was a place he stayed regularly if he wasn’t in Washington. The movie is set just before Hitler started his war in Europe. The English see the threat and the king decides to come to Hyde Park to get support from Roosevelt. The movie tries to depict the historic characters as normal people, including their flaws, but does the movie manage to do that? Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Bill Murray

It’s Friday again, so I already want to wish you a very enjoyable weekend and present you with a new installment of “The Many Faces of…”. Born on the 21st of September, 1950, Bill Murray has been picked as this week’s star. He comes from a big family (he had 8 brothers and sisters). When growing up he kept himself busy as lead singer of a rockband and to earn some money he worked as a golf caddy. He already acted in high school. After graduating he started taking premedical course, but never finished.

He started doing improvisational comedy together with his brother and was eventually recruited by John Belushi to star on a comedy radio show. He appeared on Saturday Night Live and TVTV. His first movie role was in Meatballs and he played Hunter S. Thompson in Where the Buffalo Roam. With movies like Caddyshack and Tootsie he quickly became a well-known actor. He was the star of Ghostbusters and Groundhog day and has appeared in lots of movies over his career, including more serious roles. Continue reading

Get Low (2009)

Robert Duvall has been acting since the sixties. He has acted in a lot of well-known movies like The Godfather series, Apocalypse Now and Falling Down. When I hear his name I always have to think about his role in Falling Down. He played a likeable cop who is about to retire and has to chase a lunatic who is terrorizing the city. It’s the first time he really stood out for me and I have been enjoying his acting ever since. He was also excellent in We Own the Night for example.

Duvall really makes Get Low the movie that it is. He’s the recluse Felix Bush, who lives alone on his own piece of land. A lot of stories are being told about him, although no one seems to know whether or not they are true. Because of these stories everyone seems to fear him, especially when he suddenly rides into the nearby town. He knows a lot of stories are told about him and he has an idea which allows him to hear all of them. Continue reading

Ed Wood (1994)

According to some Ed Wood was the worst director that ever lived. Others might think of Uwe Boll, but I can’t confirm either choice as I haven’t seen any film made by these directors. After watching the movie Ed Wood I actually would like to watch at least on of his movies as I got this “so bad it’s good” feeling about them. Ed Wood tries to show how this director ended up in the world of movies and what happened once he did. Continue reading

Groundhog Day (1993)

There are movies which I will watch on TV if I just happen to see it playing (although I actually hate to watch movies on cable because of all the commercial breaks). Coming to America is one of those movies and Groundhog Day is another one. Bill Murray is weather man Phil who, together with his producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott), travels to the little village of Punxsutawney to report on Groundhog Day, the day on which a groundhog does a prediction on how long the winter will last.

Everything seems like routine job and Phil heads back home. They find out quickly they won’t be able to make it because of blizzard and are forced to return to Punxsutawney. It will be Phil’s longest day. Lees verder

Ghostbusters 2 (1989)

After the success and popularity of the original Ghostbusters, it was a logical choice to make a sequel. At the start of this second movie it’s clear that the popularity of the Ghostbusters is not at the same anymore when compared to the end of the first movie. There are no ghost sightings anymore and the Ghostbusters are forced to show up for kids parties to make a living. But even the kids think they are boring.
As this setup would result in a very dull film and this movie is about ghostbusters, it’s no surprise that there supernatural things start happening again, which allows the iconic quartet to get back to work. Continue reading
