Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Review Jupiter Ascending

The Wachowskis don’t seem to want to make “safe” movies. The want to think big, bring different concepts and spectacle to the screen. That sometimes leads to movies which are widely loved like The Matrix (where reality wasn’t what it seemed to be), but also movies which divide audiences, like Cloud Atlas (a story told across centuries).

With Jupiter Ascending they show that daring attitude again. By taking a story which would also work as a costume drama, spectacular action as you’d expect from them, costumes which wouldn’t look bad in a Tarsem Singh movie and a sauce of science fiction, they have created a movie which is meant to be seen on the big screen. 22 Jump Street (2014)

22 Jump Street Review

Before 21 Jump Street was released there were not many movie lovers who were expecting it would be a movie worth watching. Several TV shows were already turned into movies (Miami Vice and The A-Team are just two of them) and in general they were of inferior quality, not being able to make the concept of the TV show shine in movie format. 21 Jump Street managed to surprise though, partly because it made fun of the fact it was a remake of a TV series, but also because of the chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. It was a fun, entertaining comedy which was very successful and of course that means a sequel would be made.

The result is 22 Jump Street. Usually sequels to comedies will disappoint because they try to do the exact same thing and it simply doesn’t work again (Analyze That, The Hangover 2). But is this movie able to also surprise people in a positive way like the original did? Continue reading

White House Down (2013)

Review of White House Down (2013)

White House Down and the also recently released Olympus Has Fallen both cover the same subject. It is something which we see happening often. In this case both movies are about an attack on the White House. I thought Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler was a very entertaining movie and wondered if White House Down, starring Jamie Foxx as the American president and Channing Tatum as the guy who has to save him would be just as entertaining. The movie has been directed by Roland Emmerich, who is known to offer great spectacle (just think of 2012, 10000 B.C., The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day). My expectations therefore were quite high. Continue reading

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) review

I generally don’t care much what a movie is based on. It can be a book, a videogame or in this case on action figures. The source really doesn’t say anything about what the movie will be. Although I can hardly remember anything about the original G.I. Joe movie except for two guys jumping through either a bus or subway, I quite enjoyed it. When growing up I never played with G.I. Joe (which are called Action Man over in Europe I think), I was more into He-Man and Bravestar, so I don’t have any affinity with any of the figures/characters. Going into the movie I was expecting a dumb but entertaining action movie. Does Retaliation offer that? Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Channing Tatum

Overview

Channing Tatum was born on April 26, 1980 in Cullman, Alabama. As he was growing up he was always participating in various sports (football, soccer, martial arts among many others). He eventually went to Glenville State College on a football scholarship, but decided to drop out. He went back home and after doing various jobs he worked as a stripper (Chan Crawford). When he moved to Miami he was noticed by a talent scout. His first casting was that of a dancer in Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” video. He also modelled for Armani and did other commercials. He kept doing his modeling work. His first acting appearance was on the hit show CSI: Miami in 2004 and since 2005 he started appearing in movies, like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Coach Carter, Step Up, Fighting, Public Enemies, 21 Jump Street and the G.I. Joe movies amongst many others. Continue reading
