Sicario (2015) – Review

Review Sicario

As children, we learn that we have to color inside the lines, that in fairy tales there is only right and wrong, and that the world consists of contradictions: Black / White. As you get older you start to realise life is not so simple, that nuance exists and there is always another side to a story. Not everyone always takes the time to look into the nuance because it makes it easier to form an opinion about something or to make a judgment.

This also applies to the law. Of course a judge looks at the facts of a case and decides if something is right or wrong. But what do you as a police unit against an enemy who is able to do anything and has more money, people and weapons available than you? Should you still have to follow the rules when you see that you won’t be able to win that way? Continue reading

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Review Edge of Tomorrow

Does such a thing as talent exit? Was your favourite artist of director really born that way? Or was it something else? Is it possible that they have become as good as they have simply because they put in enough time to learn their trade? As someone who likes learning new things I really don’t believe in talent. It is all about gaining experience, making new techniques your own and repeating something a lot. If you put in enough time you will become good at it. Of course the speed you learn that skill might differ from person to person. Edge of Tomorrow proves that with enough time you will be able to amaze everyone, but in this case that might take you a couple of lives. Continue reading

She went to the Ibstock Place School and when she was 16 she studied at Hurtwood House, which has a very good performing arts programme. An agent discovered her there and she performed in a play opposite of Judi Dench. Her performance stood out and she was named “Best Newcomer”. She appeared in various other plays and made the move into TV and film in 2003. She has since appeared in many movies including The Devil Wears Prada, Charlie Wilson’s War, The Adjustment Bureau, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and Looper. Continue reading

The Five Year Engagement (2012)

Jason Segel is one of those actors that can really do no wrong in my book and I’ve enjoyed his presence in each movie I’ve seen him in. Ignoring the marketing (it’s usually a bad sign if a movie poster states “From the producer of…” as that says nothing about the quality of this movie) I was looking forward to seeing this movie. Continue reading

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

Determinism and free will are two concepts that are complete opposites. Is your path through life already fixed or is it you who makes all the choices? These are the ideas that The Adjustment Bureau takes to build its story on. Matt Damon is politician David Norris, a very succesful and driven man who is about to make it big in politics and could even go as far as the White House. When he meets Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt) his life changes when he finds out that there is no such thing as coincidence. Continue reading

Gulliver’s Travels (2010)

Gulliver’s Travels (which was written in 1726) has been adapted for film many times. A quick look at Wikipedia shows this is the 17th film about the story, so there’s a very big chance that you already saw a version of this story about a man who ends up on the island of Lilliput inhabited by tiny people who are in a state of war with a rival island. Does Jack Black manage to give a fresh twist to this story with his humour? Continue reading
