The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008)

Nope, it’s not a typo, this movie is really called The Good The Bad The Weird. It’s got nothing to do with Sergio Leone and you won’t see Clint Eastwood acting in it. Despite this it is very clear that The Good, The Bad and The Ugly has had a big influence on this Korean Western. South Korea has a big movie industry and manages to deliver some great quality film like Old Boy. Is this western just as good? Continue reading

The King’s Speech (2010)

The King’s Speech is expected to be one of the big winners during this weekend’s Oscar ceremony, so I though it would be a good moment to review it. At the BAFTA’s the movie already won several prizes, including best actor (Colin Firth), best actress (Helena Bonham Carter), best supporting role (Geoffrey Rush) and best screenplay. What’s the reason this movie has won so much and has such a big chance of winning? Continue reading

Ondine (2009)

Most of you will know the classic fairy tales. When you were a kids you heard the stories about Hansel and Gretel, little red riding hood and Snow White. These stories have been told for centuries, but despite their age they are still being told as they have some magical qualities and a deeper truth which will teach something to kids. The lessons learned are usually about the fear of something evil, which has to be defeated.
According to Wikipedia an ondine is a mythological water nymph and as it usually goes with people telling stories, they get changed and local elements are added to it. In the Irish version of the story the nymph is called a Selkies which you will see after a seal sheds of its skin to change into a human.

This movie has based its story on this fairy tale. Syracuse (Colin Farrell) is a fisherman who finds a woman in his net, Ondine (Alicja Bachleda). The woman is still alive and tells him that she wants no one to see her. Syracuse takes her to a deserted house where she’s able to stay. She joins him on some fishing trips and every time she sings a song he catches more fish than he ever does.
Syracuse is divorced and has a young daughter, Annie (Alison Barry), who’s in a wheelchair and regularly has to go to the hospital for dialysis. When she finally receives an electric wheelchair she gains a lot more freedom and go out on her own. She discovers the secret her father is keeping from her. Continue reading

Le Samouraï (1967)

Le samouraï opens with the line:

There is no greater solitude than that of the samurai unless it is that of the tiger in the jungle…

It tells the story about a hitman, Jef Costello (Alain Delon), who has been hired to murder the boss of a nightclub. Costello is very effective and always makes sure he doesn’t get caught. He plans everything thoroughly. He steals a car, has the number plates changed, makes sure he has an alibi and doesn’t leave traces.

He executes his assignment, but doesn’t manage to do it unseen as there are several witnesses.
The police starts rounding up people in various neighbourhoods that match the description.
With all this attention from the police and added pressure from the people who gave him the job getting nervous Jef is forced to live as a tiger in a concrete jungle. Continue reading

The Dark Side of Chocolate (2010)

Chocolate is my personal addiction, whether it’s some M&M’s or a candy bar, it’s something I eat almost every day. It turns out that behind the wonderful taste which can make a person very happy, there is also a darker side. In this documentary Roberto Romano decides to investigate stories about child labor during the production and harvesting of cocoa beans. Continue reading

The Other Guys (2010)

The first scene of the Other Guys is so good and over the top that Michael Bay probably will be impressed by it. Agents Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) show in only a couple of minutes how to catch criminals, even if that means causing millions in damages. They are so popular that nobody really cares about something like that. They also refuse to do any paperwork (as they are way too cool to spend time on something so useless), but their boss, Captain Gene Mauch (Michael Keaton), doesn’t mind as there are enough other police officers available at headquarters that are able to do this boring job.

Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) are two of these officers. Allen doesn’t mind doing it at all (he even volunteers doing it), but Terry hates having to sit behind a desk. Because of an error he made when he was younger he’s forced to having a desk job.
Allen however is excellent in the job he does and by doing his paperwork properly he finds out that David Ershon, a wealthy businessman, has made some mistakes related to his business. Allen and Terry decide to arrest him for it and by doing so they get entangled in a bigger case than they were expecting. Continue reading

In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007)

It’s never nice to be alone during the holidays at the end of the year. Wilson (Scoot McNairy) is not looking forward to the end of the year and wishes the year to be over as soon as possible. A friend of him convinces him to get a date on the last day of the year. He places an ad on Craigslist and it doesn’t take long for replies to appear. He decides to meet up with Vivian (Sara Simmonds). The movie follows the two during the last hours of the year and shows them meeting up and talking to each other.
As the movie has won quite a lot of awards I was looking forward to seeing. Unfortunately I wasn’t prepared for such a big disappointment. Continue reading

Split Second (1992)

London, an alternative 2008. Global warming has taken its toll and big parts of London have disappeared below the water. Rutger Hauer is Harley Stone, he’s a cop who lost his partner. He has been chasing his partner’s killer for a long while and he can sense when the killer is near. He likes to work alone (but as it usually goes in these type of movies) a new partner assigned to him. Harley doesn’t stop his search. The killer is still out there and when new murders occur they manage to get a lot closer to him. It turns out that the killer is not who they expect. Continue reading
