22 Jump Street (2014)

22 Jump Street Review

Before 21 Jump Street was released there were not many movie lovers who were expecting it would be a movie worth watching. Several TV shows were already turned into movies (Miami Vice and The A-Team are just two of them) and in general they were of inferior quality, not being able to make the concept of the TV show shine in movie format. 21 Jump Street managed to surprise though, partly because it made fun of the fact it was a remake of a TV series, but also because of the chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. It was a fun, entertaining comedy which was very successful and of course that means a sequel would be made.

The result is 22 Jump Street. Usually sequels to comedies will disappoint because they try to do the exact same thing and it simply doesn’t work again (Analyze That, The Hangover 2). But is this movie able to also surprise people in a positive way like the original did? Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Jonah Hill

Overview movies Jonah Hill

With the release of 22 Jump Street this week, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill I thought I’d be a good time to look at the many roles of the latter one. Jonah Hill was born on December 20 1983 in Los Angeles. When he was in college he was writing and performing his own plays. He managed to be successfull and it resulted in him pursuing a career in film. Thanks to him being friends with the kids of Dustin Hoffman he managed to get a audition for what would be his first movie role in I Heart Huckabees. He played a small role in The 40 Year Old Virgin and Judd Apatow would later give him a bigger role in Knocked Up and Superbad and would continue to work with him. He was in the TV show Campus Ladies. His roles in Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street earned him Oscar nominations. Except acting he also is a writer and co wrote Bruno and 21 Jump Street. The Watch (2012)

After watching the very dark Ill Manors I really was in the need for a lighter movie and looking at the movies that were playing at the cinema directly after it I decided to see The Watch. It’s got Ben Stiller in it, so I expected it to provide a funny hour and a half. I had not read reviews of it, so went in completely blind. Was my gamble a waste of time or well worth it? Continue reading

Cyrus (2010)

A while ago Anomolous Material had an article about actors that are better at doing supporting roles instead of playing the main part in a movie. One of the actors that was on the list was John C. Reilly and I agree with his inclusion on the list. He was funny in Talladega Nights and Step Brothers, but the reason for it was because of the rest of the cast. In Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, which spoofed Walk the Line, he starred and I was really disappointed by that film as it just wasn’t funny. With Cyrus he gets another chance to show he has the star power to pull it off. Does he manage to do it or does this movie show he just can’t? Continue reading

Megamind (2010)

Through the years the focus of most movies has been on the good guys. Of course there have been some exceptions like the Emperor’s New Groove or the more recent Despicable Me, where the villain was the focus of the movie. Megamind (voiced by Will Ferrell) is next villain to star in an animated movie, fighting he arch-enemy Metro Man (Brad Pitt). Metro Man is the superman of Metro City, which really annoys Megamind.
The two have been fighting for years, with Metro Man constantly winning. Megamind just keeps going until one of his plans suddenly seems to work and finally he can claim victory and is able to make his dreams come true. He takes over the city and is able to execute all his evil plans. This initially feels good, but the feeling doesn’t last long. Continue reading

Get Him to the Greek (2010)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a comedy which I really liked (I gave it a 9 and have seen it several times). In that movie Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) was the extremely annoying new boyfriend that Sarah was dating, a rocker who just said what he thought. Get Him to the Greek is a Forgetting Sarah Marshall spinoff, focussing on Aldous Snow.
Aaron Green (Jonah Hill, who’s playing a different character as he did in Forgetting Sarah Marshall deed) works at a record company. The sales of Aldous Snow’s music are exteremely low and Aaron suggests to organise a concert by Snow in L.A.’s Greek theater to repeat a succesfull show he had there exactly ten years before to stimulate sales.
His boss, Sergio Roma (a very funny Sean Combs), thinks it’s a great idea and orders Aaron to fly to England to get Aldous Snow and make sure that he travels to L.A. (without any problems) to do the show. Aaron has no idea what he has gotten himself into. Continue reading

The Invention of Lying (2009)

Could you imagine a world in which everyone told the truth? Not only in situations where you asked someone a question, but all the time. So at the beginning of the date the other person immediately tells you what his/her plans are and what they think you. So no compliments to make you feel good, just what is going through the mind of that person.
This is the world of The Invention of Lying. It’s a funny starting point which does results in some good jokes in the first half of the movie. When Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) loses his writing job for a television network and gets into financial trouble he decides to make something up. This results in the world’s first lie. Because no one actually knows the concept of lying he sees a world full of opportunity. Continue reading

Superbad (2007)

In the last couple of years Judd Apaptow managed to change the face of the comedy genre.
With the humor in movies like 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall he has shown that that kind of humor, which is more oriented to older watcher is a very succesful formula. There have been a lot of movies that tried to copy it, but not all have managed to follow the success. Apatow was also involved with Superbad and you can clearly see. The movie shows a couple of teenagers who promise their fellow students they will buy booze for a party. It’s a big chance for them to be very popular at school. There is only one slight problem and it’s that they don’t have the legal age to buy alcohol yet. Continue reading
