Mirror Mirror (2012)

review

It always amazes me that studios always bring out the same type of movies around the same time. If one type of movie is succesful other studios try to bring out something similar. This year it seems to be time for the fairytale movies based on Snow white. Tarsem Singh (The Fall, Immortals) was the first movie to appear and him being known for his unique visual style I was really looking forward to seeing it. Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Julia Roberts

For this week installment I’ve picked actress Julia Roberts. She was born in 1967. Her parents acted as well and many of her relatives have made a career in acting too (for example her brother Eric Roberts). When she was growing up she wanted to become a veterinarian, but after graduating from high school she did pursue a career in acting. She appeared in some smaller movies and televsion series (she did an episode of Miami Vice for example), but her breakthrough role was opposite of Richard Gere in Pretty Woman and has appeared in a lot of movies since. She won an Oscar for her role in Erin Brockovich. Continue reading

Charlie Wilson’s War (2007)

It’s not often that movies based on someone’s life are funny. I Love you Philip Morris is one example I can think of, but so is Charlie Wilson’s War, despite the serious subject of the tension that was brewing in Afghanistan between the local people and the invading Russian army.

Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) is a politician from Texas who lives a very luxurious life while he has his seat in the American Congress. He likes his women, booze and drugs and really has fun with it all. When he sees the situation in Afghanistan on TV something changes. He decides to do something about it and finds out that America is hardly spending any money on getting the Russians out of Afghanistan.

He’s helped by Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) who, although she’s not a politician, does know the right people to get things done. There is also help from CIA agent Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who really doesn’t care what the people within the CIA think of him. Together they try to make some money available for Afghanistan. Continue reading

Valentine’s day (2010)

Valentine’s day is one of the most commercial days of the year (like christmas), this movie also tried to earn some money by making a movie about it. The number of well-known actors that play in this movie can’t be counted on one hand (Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher and many more). Continue reading
