The Ten: Best Directors of All Time “relay race”

best directors of all time

Oh yes, it’s time to start another of these! Who are the ten best directors? I have the feeling that this is going to be one of the most discussed ones.

Making the initial list has been very hard and there are tons of directors I think should be mentioned, but of course I had to narrow it down, which means some of your favorites might not be in here. Don’t worry though as the rules of this relay race are as follows:

So what’s the idea behind the relay? I’ve created a list of what I think are the ten best directors. At the end of the post I, just like in a real relay race, hand over the baton to another blogger who will write his own post. This blogger will have to remove one director (that is an obligation) and add his own choice and describe why he/she did this. At the end the blogger chooses another blogger to do the same. We will end up with a list (not ranked in order) which represents a common agreement of the best directors.
If you are following the relay race it is also a great way to be introduced to new blogs!

So which directors are on the starting grid? Who are The Ten? Continue reading

Actors who turned down big movie roles

Once you have seen a movie it becomes almost impossible to see any other actors starring in it. When movies are made though, roles were not always initially offered to the star you see on the silver screen. A lot of actors turn down roles. For some movies this is a good decision (as Halle Berry turned down Gigli for example), but there some movies that became big hits and they might have been scratching their heads when they saw so.

Can you imagine the following actors starring in these movies? Continue reading

24 hours of movies – What would you watch?

This week I saw a lot of tweets about Christian Marclay’s The Clock, which is a movie which lasts 24 hours and is made up of thousands of clips from various movies which are synced with the actual time. Seems like a very interesting thing to watch, but as it is probably one I’ll never see it got me thinking what I would watch if I had to watch movies a whole day. The rules are simple, you can pick any movie you like that has been released (even ones that you know are hard or impossible to get) and fill the day with watching them. Although I know I would probably fall asleep before the end if I’d try it, these are the movies I would pick to experience 24 hours of film. Continue reading

50 Things I don’t like about movies

So after reading the lists at Eternity of Dream , The Dark of the Matinee and Cinematic Paradox about 100 things they love about movies I decided to make a list of 50 things I don’t like about movies, moviegoing and the culture (100 things would be a stretch and would probably result in some weaker entries) :

1. Classics hardly are shown in the cinema

2. Steroscopic 3D (read that holographic 3D might solve normal 3D issues, although it possibly can’t be scaled to cinema size)

3. People talking (or basically doing anything resulting in them not paying attention and annoying others) in the cinema during a film

4. Knowing that I won’t be able to see all the great movies that have ever been made

5. People that refuse to watch a movie because it’s in black and white

6. Trying to stay spoiler free, but accidentally reading or hearing something which kind of ruins your enjoyment as you know what will happen

7. Movies which are out of print and can only be bought for extreme high prices on ebay (like My Sassy Girl director’s cut)

8. Anti-Piracy warnings on DVD. I already bought the thing, why can’t I just immediately watch the movie and have to wait until the menu appears as the warnings can’t be skipped?

9. Falling asleep during a very interesting movie just because I’m that tired

10. Knowing I won’t be able to finish watching a film because I really have to get up early the next morning.
