Short movie: Gregory Go Boom

Gregory Go Boom

Through his various roles Michael Cera has built up an image of the awkward teenager and for a long time has been typecast in that role. In This Is The End he actually played “himself” and was very enjoyable as an annoying guy, which was refreshing to see. In this 2013 short movie (only 17 minutes) he plays Greagory, who lives together in a trailer with his sister who takes care of him. Gregory is done with that and wants to move in with his brother. This results in some frustration, but Gregory has set up three dates, which might be able to brighten up his life. Continue reading

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Those that have read my Youth in Revolt review know that I really had it with Michael Cera. Not because he’s a bad actor, but because he seems to be playing the same character in each movie he does, which is the role of an insecure teenager (although he’s already 22), who’s very clumsy and despite that manages to get with the girl of his dreams. Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) is a teenager who, when some things happen at home, has to spend a weekend away from it together with his mother and stepfather. Here he meets Sheeni (Portia Doubleday), the girl of his dreams. When the weekend ends he vows he’ll manage to get back to her by any means necessary. Continue reading

Superbad (2007)

In the last couple of years Judd Apaptow managed to change the face of the comedy genre.
With the humor in movies like 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall he has shown that that kind of humor, which is more oriented to older watcher is a very succesful formula. There have been a lot of movies that tried to copy it, but not all have managed to follow the success. Apatow was also involved with Superbad and you can clearly see. The movie shows a couple of teenagers who promise their fellow students they will buy booze for a party. It’s a big chance for them to be very popular at school. There is only one slight problem and it’s that they don’t have the legal age to buy alcohol yet. Continue reading
