Lucy (2014)

Review Lucy

Scarlett Johansson has one of the best years of her career with roles in movies like Her, Captain America and Under the Skin. The life she has breathed into the characters in those movies have all been memorable and she currently seems incapable of picking bad roles. For Lucy she teams up with director Luc Besson (5th Element, Léon). Do they succeed in continuing the success of Johansson ? Continue reading

Under the Skin (2014)

Review: Under the Skin

When Kanye West release his latest album Yeezus there was a big number of fans who were disappointed by it because the music was very different compared to previous albums. The beats were almost experimental and many didn’t like that. It wasn’t a “standard hip hop album”. Personally I really liked it, simply because it tried to do something different, which made it challenging to listen to. Under the Skin manages to do that as a film. The question though is whether the average movie fan is able to appreciate that challenge. Continue reading

Her (2013)

Review Her

Technology is developing at an exponential rate. The machines which once were considered supercomputers and occupied whole rooms now fit in the palm of your hand. That exponential growth does not seem to stop anytime soon and many futurists already try to look ahead and predict where it will lead us. Ray Kurzweil is one of them, who predicts that there will be a moment where our minds simply will not be able to keep up with artificial intelligence, which will end up changing society. He even thinks there will be a moment where we no longer will need our physical bodies anymore and we can just upload ourselves to a computer, basically granting us eternal life and opening up new experiences. It is a subject I have always been interested in, seeing where technology will take mankind. Her is one vision of a future which to me does not sound that far-fetched. Continue reading

Lost in Translation (2003)

Review of Lost in Translation

At the beginning of the year one of my goals would be to rewatch more movies than I did last year. In general I tend to prefer watching movies I have not seen yet, but revisiting movies which you have seen is like meeting an old friend you have not spoken to in a long while. You might wonder if you still enjoy their presence as much as before and I had that feeling with Lost in Translation. Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Scarlett Johansson

Every week I take a look at the roles of a specific actor or actress. This week the choice is Scarlett Johansson. She was born in New York in 1984. Her father was an architect and her mother a producer (and film buff). Her grandfather was a director and screenwriter. Her first appearance was in the 1994 movie North when she was only nine years old. Thanks to her roles in movies like The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World people started noticing her and she started appearing in bigger movies. Continue reading

Iron Man 2 (2010)

The first Iron Man film was a very good superhero movie (which i gave an 8 at the time). It was a good movie that showed the origins of Iron man. Now that we know how he came to be, part 2 can crank up the action. Does Iron Man how to fly to great highs again or is there a malfunction in the suit that makes the movie crash horribly? Continue reading
