The Monday Question: What is your opinion on the Oscar winners?

Last night the Oscars were announced. It’s a ceremony I don’t stay up for to watch, but I’m always curious the next day to find out who are the big winners. (You can find them here). I never do predictions, but the only category for which I really had a preference was best animated feature and I was happy to see that Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse won.

Bohemian Rapsody and The Favourite are movies I have not seen, so I can’t share my opinion on those movies winning. It is nice to see that Alfonso CuarĂ³n went home with three Oscars for his masterpiece Roma. The category which surprised me most was that of best film, which Green Book won. A title which I enjoyed watching and does show big social issues during the sixties which are unfortunately still relevant now, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression on me, it lacked subtlety. I would have rather seen Roma win.

The Monday Question: Star Wars, yes or no?

For many movielovers Christmas starts early this year as they can already start unwrapping their gift this week in the form of the latest Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. You probably know a couple of people whose love for these science fiction movies is deeprooted, but also a couple who have never seen them. I watched these films for the first time when I was in my twenties. They are films I am able to enjoy but which I haven’t watched more than other movies I see (so probably once or twice). After the fantastic The Force Awakens I’m curious about the new movie in the same way I always look forward to a new Marvel movie. On Saturday the world premiere took place and the first couple of tweets about the movie really praise it. Enough reason for me to make sure I see it before the end of the year as I might need to include it on my year’s end list, but not one I will make sure to take time off for on Wednesday when it will be released over here to be one of the first to see it.

But what about you? Are you a fan of Star Wars and if not, what’s the reason? Continue reading

The Monday Question: What are your favourite visual moments in movies?

The Monday Question

As a movie lover you want to be surprised. A good movie is able to do that, but also lesser films can have moments you didn’t expect or make a profound impression on you. It’s for those moments you watch them. Whether that’s the chase in Children of Men, the destruction of a space station in Gravity or the breathtaking moments in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Those are just a couple of moments from the top of my head. All personal favourites which are part of fantastic films, but the following moment which comes from the movie Upside Down, is also very high on my list. In this movie two planets are right next to each other. The object of each world are pulled to their own respective world. So if you want to visit the other one you have to wear things heavier than you from the other world to stay there. That’s what the main character is this film does. The problem though is that after a while the contact between these two worlds mean that the object will start to catch fire. That’s what has happened here, so the character has jumped into sea and swam away from sure to get rid of his weight and “fall” back to his own world. It’s a breath taking moment which I’ve watched a lot:

The Monday Question: When do you start watching Christmas movies?

The Monday Question

Although it’s not even December yet, Christmas decorations already have started to show up in shopping malls and department stores. You can already order your ugly Christmas sweaters and people are already sharing their recommendations for gifts and most people will be getting a Christmas tree soon. Of course when it comes to movies there is a lot of choice when it comes to this time of year. A quick view at IMDb shows there are 1149 movies in which Santa appears, which means there isn’t even time to watch them all. So the question this week is:

When do you start watching Christmas movies?

The Monday Question: Is blogging dying?

The Monday Question

Yeah, that might be shocking title but it’s something I’ve been thinking about quite a few times. The reason for this question popping up is of course the statistics. A couple of years ago I was getting almost a quarter of a million views each year, thousands each day. But those statistics have been dropping at a steady rate and it was also the reason I’m not updating as regularly as I used to. There are still people commenting once in a while, but these are mostly people who’ve been reading my posts for ages. Not a lot of new bloggers drop by and it’s a shame to see as it isn’t very motivating to keep going. I’m wondering what your thoughts on this are, is blogging dying?

The Monday Question: Have you ever met up with several moviebloggers?

The Monday Question

It’s been a while since I done one of these, but thought it would be fun to do one again. Hope you had a good weekend. I definitely did as I organised a movie blog get together event for dutch movie bloggers. We met up in a cinema in Utrecht, watched It’s Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong, did a film quiz and basically had an amazing time getting to know each other. I also launched filmblogs.nl, which basically shows all the latest posts from the various movie blogs in the Netherlands, all in one quick overview. The event took a lot of planning, but it was an amazing day which I’m still smiling about, two days later.

Which leads me to this week’s Monday question:
Did you ever attend a movie blog event and if so what was the experience like? Continue reading

The Monday Question: What did you think about the Oscars this year?

The Monday Question

As a movie fan it is pretty difficult to escape from people posting about the Oscars and giving their predictions. Personally I don’t care for them much. The last time I’ve seen them the year probably started with 19. I did take a peek at the list of winners, but it’s not something I will spent much energy on (for example I think many people will write a lot about Stallone not winning, but I’m not surprised by the winner). But as I’m probably one of the few movie bloggers who doesn’t care much I am wondering how others have experienced the Oscars this year:

The Monday Question: Would you miss end credits?

The Monday Question

It’s the start of the week again and what better way to start with something to think about. This past weekend I had a strange dream. Now I normally can’t remember dreaming, but this one somehow stayed with me since it was movie related. I was at a cinema and when the movie finished there were no credits at the end of the movie. Since I was at a cinema which normally plays the better films some audience members got upset and actually started protesting and asking questions to the staff. It was such a weird situation and it made me think about ending credits.

There used to be a time when they simply weren’t there. You saw a couple of credits at the start of the movie and when the movie was done it only showed “The End”. It’s something I always like seeing and never mind, but I’m wondering about your opinion:

Would you miss end credits?

The Monday Question: How important is the form in which you see movies at home?

The Monday Question

There are various ways in which you can watch movies. Of course the best one is to see it on a huge cinema screen and the best possible sound, but that’s not always possible. The way I watch movies at home varies quite a lot. Of course I prefer to watch it on my projector and surround set, but I sometimes have to settle with my TV or seeing something on either a tablet or mobile phone. With documentaries I don’t really mind the setup, but with specific blockbusters I need to see it in the best way I can. But I can imagine not everyone thinks like that and that some parts of a setup are not that important. Some don’t think surround sound adds much, some will be content to watch everything on a phone and its built in speaker. So this week’s question is:

How important is the form in which you see movies at home?

The Monday Question: What are the must visit movieblogs at the moment for you?

The Monday Question

The last year my activities on this blog have been a bit less compared to the years before. Main reason was putting more time into the dutch version of the site (which has payed off), but it meant I wasn’t able to write as much and visit other blogs as much as I used to. I’m still visiting some of the ones I used to, but don’t know which worthwhile new blogs have popped up lately. So that’s the question this week:

What are the must visit movieblogs at the moment for you?
