Arbitrage (2012)

Review of the movie Arbitrage starring Richard Gere

It’s been ages since I’ve last seen Richard Gere in anything (from the top of my head it was 2002’s The Mothman Prophecies, but a fact check at IMDB shows it was 2009’s Brooklyn’s Finest) and since I do think he’s a good actor I was interested in seeing him in a starring role again. He plays Robert Miller, a very succesful businessman who is about to sell his company for hundreds of millions and will be set for life. At first glance his life seems perfect. He can spend time with his wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) and children (who both work at his company) and lives in luxury. Behind that facade though there are a lot of dark secrets which he has kept from the ones closest to him and as events happen it seems he can no longer keep those a secret very long. Safe House (2012)

review

The world of spies is always an interesting subject for movies. It has spawned big franchises like the Bond, Bourne and Mission Impossible series, but every year also sees a sprinkling of other spy related movies, movies like Salt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Spy Game, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Haywire immediately come to mind. Safe House is also set in the world from spies, but the setup is slightly different. Continue reading

Tell No One (2006)

review

France sure know how to make a good thriller. After recently seeing Point Blank I read about this movie on someone else’s blog (sorry I can’t remember who it was, but I follow so many). Since it also starred François Cluzet, who I really loved in The Intouchables (which you really should see immediately if you can) I had to check it out. So is it any good? Continue reading

Seeking Justice (2011)

Seeking Justice (2011) review
Through the years Oscar winner Nicholas Cage has slowly seemed to have lost his focus when it comes to starring in amazing movies. A lot of people are disappointed in a lot of his later movies, but personally I’m a big fan and usually watch anything he’s in, even know if I know in advance what I’m going into. To me Cage is just entertaining to watch, no matter what he stars in. If you are not a fan though, is Seeking Justice a movie that’s worth seeing? Continue reading

Lady Vengeance (2005)

Lady Vengeance is the third film of Park Chan-Wook’s revenge trilogy (the other two are Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy). The protagonist is Lee Geum-ja (Lee Young Ae) who has just been released from prison after she was sentenced to go there for murdering a little boy. She’s innocent though and has been able to plan her revenge on the real killer (played by Choi Min-Sik). During her prison sentence she made a name for herself and after her release she can use the friends she made there to execute her plan. Continue reading

Memories of Murder (2003)

Some years ago Quentin Tarantino shared his list of his 20 favorite movies since 1992, the year he started directing. There were three Korean movies on his list: The Host, Joint Security Area and Memories of Murder. Memories of Murder is about a police investigation into a number of serial killings that took place between 1986 and 1991 and is based on real events. Continue reading

The Chaser (2008)

An agent that has become a pimp, Women that disappear and a serial killer are the ingredients for The Chaser, a South Korean crime thriller. Joong-ho (Yun-seok Kim) runs an escort company and notices that a couple of the women he is using are not coming back. When he sends one of his girls, Mi-jin (Yeong-hie Seo), to a customer he finds out that he has sent her to the same customer the other girls went after they disappeared. He decides to track him down as he’s worried about Mi-jin. He managed to find him (a role excellently played by Jung-woo Ha), but there is no trace of the woman. When both of them are arrested it’s the start of an exciting search for the missing woman in a race against the clock. Continue reading

I Saw the Devil (2010)

Revenge movies. It’s a genre in which South Korea seems to be specialised. At least that’s my conclusion after having seen several of them. These films are not afraid to show violence in all its gruesome detail and manage to shock and make you feel something while you are watching it. I Saw the Devil takes the revenge idea a bit further than expected as just getting revenge once does not seem to be enough. While you are watching you will feel uncomfortable about this story in which Kim Soo-hyeon (Byung-hun Lee (The Good, The Bad, The Weird)) wants to have revenge on a serial killer, Kyung-Chul (played by Min-sik Choi (Oldboy)), who has murdered his wife. Continue reading

Mother (2009)

The original title of this Korean movie is Madeo, which can be translated into two meanings, both mother and murder are possible as the characters in the language are the same. Hye-ja Kim stars in this movie, in which her son Yoon Do-joon (Bin Won) is being suspected of a crime. As Yoon Do-joon has some mental issues, it’s hard for her to find out if he really has committed the crime. As a mother she’s willing to do anything to find out the truth and get her son out of jail. Continue reading

Faster (2010)

Dwayne Johnson has managed to build quite a career for himself. After his initial fame as The Rock he made a succesful leap into movies. Initially these were roles in action movies like The Scorpion King and The Rundown, but he has also shown that he’s good at doing comedic roles in films like The Tooth Fairy, Be Cool and The Other Guys.
With Faster he returns to his roots with a “hard as nails” action movie Continue reading
