Atlanta – Season 1 – Review

Review Atlanta seizoen 1

Most will know Donald Glover as an actor, but he is also an artist (Childish Gambino), director, writer, comedian and producer. He appeared in Community, The Martian, Spider-Man: Homecoming and for the Han Solo film he will play Lando Calrissian. So it is someone who has a busy life and also finds the time to make his own series in the form of Atlanta. A series that wanted to see for a while, but did not get around to. Luckily I had a long flight a while ago where the show was on the entertainment system and I could finally watch it. Continue reading

The OA – Review

Review The OA

Brit Marling is an actress who might not be well-known to a big audience, but I have been watching her movies with great pleasure. Whether that’s Another Earth, where a second earth appears next to ours, Sound of My Voice which deals with a cult of the rebellious The East. The special thing about her is that she wasn’t only in front of the camera, but also wrote and produced these titles. They stand out by their science fiction/mysterious elements which usually it doesn’t focus on. What makes all these movies great is the personal stories that are told. Netflix only announced the show a few days before it was released and surprised everyone. Is this show just as surprising? Continue reading

Black Mirror – Season 3: Playtest

Review Black Mirror Playtest seizoen 3

As someone who has been playing games for years and who has experienced this form of entertainment developing from three simple blocks on the screen (Pong) to extremely realistic worlds like those in for example Grand Theft Auto, I sometimes wonder where we’ll eventually end up. At the moment virtual reality and augmented reality are hot, because they are able to offer a new experience where “presence” is the magic word. As a player you must have the feeling that you are really in a different place. The headsets follow the movements of your head and the world you experience matches that perfectly. It is a field that is still young in its current form, but how will it evolve? Playtest tries to give an answer to that question in a typical Black Mirror way, directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) Continue reading

American Crime Story: Seizoen 1 – Review

recensie-the-people-vs-oj-simpson

When I first about this series I started wondering if it wasn’t a bit too soon to make a show about the O.J. Simpson case. I can still remember this being in the news and how the court case got lots of attention in the media. Then I realised that these events took place more than twenty years ago. So there is a whole generation who doesn’t know this case, in which a beloved former American football-player and actor suddenly became a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend. The chase in his white Bronco was broadcast live. I didn’t know all the details of the case, but I never really watched it at the time. So this first season of American Crime Story was a nice opportunity to watch what happened and why this court case caused so much discussion. Continue reading

Gomorra: Season 2 – Review

Review gomorra seizoen 2

Season 1 of Gomorra managed to show the fascinating world in which mob boss Don Pietro Savastano, his son Genny and Ciro Di Marzio slowly got into a struggle for power in the streets of Naples. It is a show which is raw and also spends a lot of time depicting the lives of the people hustling in the street. It gives it all a very realistic feel. So I was really looking forward to this second season to find out more about what would happen after the battle at the end of the first season. Continue reading

Black Mirror – Season 3: Nosedive

black mirror nosedive season 3 review

Online we all will present ourselves slightly different from the way we really are. We won’t quickly share our negative side or bad quality pictures of ourselves. Reactions on posts others have written on social media will generally be very enthusiastic. But what would the world look like if you’d really live your online persona, where everything is perfect and you will constantly have to hide all your frustration and negative feelings? And what if you would should it and everyone around you would turn into a reviewer and give you stars based on that? That more or less is the idea behind the first episode of season 3 of Black Mirror. Continue reading

The Get Down: Season 1 – Series review

ReviewThe Get Down season 1

When I first heard about The Get Down earlier this year I was really looking forward to it. The first images looked good and also the description of the show sounded interesting:

“The Get Down” is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to a new art form. Set in New York in 1977, this music-driven drama series chronicles the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco -_ told through the lives, music, art and dance of the South Bronx kids who would change the world forever.

As a fan of hip hop this was a setting that immediately was something I wanted to know more about. Through the years I’ve learned a lot about the music, how it developed and seeing that in the form of a show on Netflix seemed awesome. The show has been written and produced by Baz Luhrmann, who has done things like Romeo+Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby in the past. Someone who is very capable to show music in an exciting way which is visually pleasing. Besides that, New York in the seventies is a fascinating setting. Gangs were still very active (the documentary Rubble Kings is a good one to learn more about that). There was a lot of crime and buildings were set ablaze in order to collect insurance money. With a budget of 10 million per episode my expectations were high when I started watching this six part first season. Continue reading

Cooked (2016) – Series review

Review Cooked Netflix

If you were to look at the picture above you might assume that Netflix has now started offering cooking shows, but this isn’t the casse. After the success of Chef’s Table, which was a beautiful show that focussed on various chefs all over the world, it now has Cooked available. This four part documentary series has been made by writer Michael Pollan and filmmaker Alex Gibney (Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, The Armstrong Lie, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) and isn’t about restaurants, top chefs or a specific way of cooking. It is about food in general and makes links to the basic elements: fire, air, water and earth and the effect they have on our daily meals. Continue reading

House of Cards – Season 4 – Review

review House of Cards seizoen 4

When a season of a show has finished it is always frustrating to have to wait a while for the next one. House of Cards is one of those shows where that feeling is very strong for me. Of course it doesn’t help that Netflix releases all episodes at once and for this fourth season it took me only four days to watch it all. At the end of the previous season the tension between Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Robin Wright) Underwood kept going up and the scene was set for a big battle between these two titans who both are not willing (or able) to give in. Together they reached the top, but now Claire also wants to realize her own ambitions. Continue reading

The Bridge – Season 3 – Review

The Bridge season 3 review

During the last couple of years The Bridge (the original version) was a great show which managed to keep me entertained during its first two seasons. With its open ending at the end of season 2, I couldn’t wait to find out what Saga NorĂ©n (Sofia Helin) and Martin Rohde (Kim Bodnia) would go through next. Something which stands out at the start of this new season though is that Martin seems to be absent. Is the character of Saga enough to carry a whole season? Continue reading
